Ammo does not increase the potency of the DoT tick, only the initial hit when the shot lands.
So it's not worth using on Lead Shot - you still do get 20 potency out of it, but you'll be getting that 20 potency plus a proc if you use it on our 1-2-3 weaponskills so that wins every time.
^^^ There is one exception to this. If you already have a proc sitting for Slug Shot and one sitting for Clean Shot AND you have an Ammo sitting, it's precisely the same thing to press Clean Shot as it is to press Hot Shot or Lead Shot (unless it's your Reassemble shot). Literally zero loss. A proc lasts for 10s, too, so if you just got them both, you can hit>
1 Ammo
Hot Shot [0 Ammo]
Lead Shot
Clean Shot
Slug Shot
And not lose either proc until it activates. This assumes I'm not an idiot, of course! I'm still just 54, so still learning. Just picked this up a few days ago when playing around in Trials.
So like tl;dr:
If you just did a Reload rotation and have Quick Reload ready BEFORE Clean Shot, you can roll:
Split Shot (slug shot proc)
Slug Shot (clean shot proc)
Split Shot (slug shot proc)
Quick Reload
[above rotation]
... IF you need the re-casts.





On a single target
- If you have no procs and exactly one ammo, that ammo is best spent on Split Shot, which gives the 20 ammo potency and guarantees Slug Shot gets +80. Since without ammo, it should (should) get the +80 potency 50% of the time anyway, we'll call this 20 + 80 * 0.5 => 60 potency.
- If you have just a Slug Shot proc, that ammo is best spent on Slug Shot, and we'll call it 20 + 100 * 0.5 => 70 potency.
- If you have both Slug Shot and Clean Shot procs, then Jack's right and Lead, Clean, and Hot Shots all get the same +20 bonus.
On groups, blow all your ammo on Grenado/Spread shots and enjoy the +20 per mob -- if you have six ammo available, that's 720 bonus on a group of six or 1080 on a group of nine.
