What would be the point of skill trees anyways? Everyone would stick to the most famous/best skill tree for every situation. It would end up being an issue and not a good feature, because everyone would want to reset the skill tree every now and then.
By the same logic, WoW would not need different skill trees, because you can make unlimited characters. The additional upside: no weekly caps on alts. Yes, WoW supports alt classes better than XIV by nature of placing them on separate characters (EXP gains and gear are separate anyways; the only advantage XIV has is in collecting BoP alt gear). Ironic? Perhaps, but mostly just obvious.

Also, when has this matter been defined by need? We don't technically need any more than one tank class. Yet we have three. And will likely get more. The real question is simply, will the development return enough entertainment to warrant its costs.

If the same skill tree can be the best for every situation there is either of two problems, neither of which is necessary unto the skill tree system itself -- either the alternatives are not well enough balanced, and/or the fights do not have enough diversity. Even in the alleged talent cluster**** of Wrath, multiple specs within specs were each viable, especially on a fight-to-fight basis. The real issue was that guides will be written and advice given for the most mainstream or popular specs, in order to support the most people, and many people are dependent on those, rather than learning how to get the most out of an irregular spec (especially through adaptation to irregular situations).
