Because it would make balancing difficult and then an issue.

that's because they don't understand that it's different teams that balance, and come up with new contentthey aren't doing just 1 thing at a time.
The biggest problem I see is the following situation:
Tank queues into a high level duty such as Midas.
Healer: "Why are you dying so quickly?"
Tank: "I went full DPS on my skill tree."
tank dies to tank buster because lack of defensive skills.
inb4 you say something like "they should let the other guy tank" or, "they should be prepared"
Majority of players that play warrior or something will go with the DPS side of the tree and not care what anyone thinks. And not exclusive to warriors. This could also happen to other roles as well. A white mage lacks big heals because they wanted Stone IV. A DPS doesn't meet the DPS check because they wanted some other bullshit.
They would have to design it in a way where no class would lack any of the skills required to complete the duty.
And I think that's the reason everyone is able to play any class on one character, and why there are so many classes per role. To negate the need for a skill tree.
or unless you were playing with friends/static/fc/made your own party.Doesn't matter. Community wouldn't accept it.
Theory crafters would calculate the "optimal" build for each class. Then all PFs would be like "Farm party, need WHM with X build" etc.
So no, you wouldn't be able to play how you want unless you were doing casual content.
Optimal builds don't have to be so different that it'd be any different than choosing an AST vs WHM or a MNK vs DRG. PF's currently don't set these requirements usually, so what makes you think builds would do that?
The idea is that if you spec a DPS spec, you queue in as a DPS and not a tank.
This was tried already in 1.0.....and it did not work. That is one of the reasons they limited it, cause ppl were complaining that their job/class had no depth.I actually agree with the concept of making all classes multi-role and I think it does have a lot of potential, Rift did something like that where they made every single class capable of tanking, melee dps, ranged dps, support healing/dps, and healing with the right build. It also opened up options for folks that might not have liked a class, I didn't like Rift's mage for example but once they added a melee dps spec and a tank spec? I love it now....
This isn't like any other MMO though.
Thematically it doesn't make sense for a DRK to start healing everyone, or a BLM to start tanking a raid boss. The purpose of having the freedom of playing all classes on one character is so people can play whatever they want. They would have to completely redo skills, stats, and gear for every class. If they made the game with this model then people would be less inclined to play more than one job.I actually agree with the concept of making all classes multi-role and I think it does have a lot of potential, Rift did something like that where they made every single class capable of tanking, melee dps, ranged dps, support healing/dps, and healing with the right build. Which is interesting, as most people say this game is more like WoW than any other MMO.
It doesn't have to be every job can do all 3 roles, but some jobs can do 2-3. i.e. DRK can do DPS/Tank, WAR DPS/Tank, PLD DPS/Tank/Heal, WHM Heal/DPS etc.Thematically it doesn't make sense for a DRK to start healing everyone, or a BLM to start tanking a raid boss. It could work, but i also think it should be a gradually introduced since this relaunch is pure vertical. I think dev's adding mareria to endgame gear itself even though I think it a joke is at least a stepping stone towards something.
One big reason why they want to keep the current system intact is that it makes it easier to design things. Balancing games can be a very tricky thing to do, so the current system makes it relatively easy to keep the game balanced. and even with the current system classes always need to go thru with some rebalancing now and then.
