TL;DR if you wanna get out of bronze/unranked..focus the same target. If I go and lock down the healer..KEEP HITTING THE SAME TARGET!

Yep, this happens a lot actually, lol. People get tunnel vision and continue focusing on the same target. I had to finally make a macro since people weren't watching the 1 pop up above the enemy's head. Apparently the sound effect snaps them out of tunnel vision and they switch targets now, so it has been working better this way, lol.
I have heard of people getting banned for "macro spamming", but I've been using them for a few days now and all I've been getting is praise of using them so far. The only reason I think people have reported macros so far is because:
A. You push it 5+ times in a row (which does constitute as spamming) and it keeps going DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING, lol.
B. The players are mad because they lost, so they report the guy for "spamming" a macro
In any case, if you use them responsibly, there shouldn't be an issue. I have a macro for when we're in the lead with time running out, one for the marked target, and one to let people know I'm capped on medal stacks, advising someone else to pick them up. No problems thus far.
Here's the thing though. If you're a DPS. Hit mark1. I don't care WHAT IS GOING ON ELSEWHERE. Just hit mark 1. If I go and stun the healer, that DOESN'T MEAN I'M CALLING FOR A TARGET CHANGE. I will mark the healer as 1 if I want that. Sometimes I just want to stun the healer and SECURE THE KILL ON MARK 1. Even if it's not a healer. If I trust my team's damage output, sometimes I'll just stunlock or blind the rDPS to help peel for my healer. This again, DOESN'T MEAN JUMP ON THE rDPS.
Also, to be fair, shame on SE for making it so splitting damage is a COMPLETELY undesirable tactic (as seen in the video).
Problem is, sometimes people set that "1" on one person and then never change it for the rest of the fight, even when every fiber of your being is saying "Okay, we've killed this person a number of times now. This isn't doing much for us now." Or it's just on a target that makes no real sense. You trust the mark, to be a good sport and all, but then it ends up costing you dearly because it was not a good target.
Then there's the many times I've focused the 1, only to have my melee dps focus something entirely different. Sometimes I just give up and switch to the melee dps target because splitting damage gets us nowhere, even if I'm on the "right" target.
Well, one thing I've noticed is that some DPS are confident enough in their abilities that they continue pushing a DPS by themselves, despite the mark being on the healer. So, the damage is split between me (PLD) and one DPS on the healer while one of our DPS chases another one, trying to kill him. Now, I don't encourage this sort of reckless behavior by any means since:
A. It undermines my authority
B. It shows you're not a team player
C. It's reckless and can cost you a death (which in turn costs your team a loss)
However, I did witness one DRG in particular that did this sort of thing and kept getting kills in 1v1 fights with DPS, so I let him do his own thing since he was good at it. After seeing the results, I realized why... He was pulling anywhere between 175k to 200k every time he was on my team, lol. The only thing that really frustrated me tonight was I got into a match and marked a DPS with the offense buff to kill in the beginning, but our DPS' burst was so terrible, we didn't even bring the guy down to 50% of his health and that was with my maxed out Full Swing vulnerability debuff active. After realizing we weren't going to kill him, I switched to their WHM and wanted us to focus them instead so we could take them down and get our DPS kill since our damage wasn't higher than their healing, so the healer had to die for us to gain the high ground.
That mark stayed on their WHM from the beginning to the end of the match and never moved for one reason... Our DPS never killed them, lol. I popped her with my vulnerability debuff when it was ready, then one of our DPS decided that was the best time to switch to another DPS and try to kill him instead (at full health no less). If the marked target never dies, that just tells you it wouldn't have mattered who you marked in that fight. You just don't have the numbers to do anything with that team and that's just the worst thing to see.
Here you have to play out the rest of this charade for the next few minutes, knowing your DPS aren't strong enough to kill anybody, but you don't want to just give up... It's so frustrating sometimes, lol.
