The moment a sword fighter start to fight with a mace he turn into a mace fighter.
The idea of the armory system, you are what you equip.
Also, sword skills would not work with a mace. Different weapons have always different ways to use them.

it's a good thing this is never going to happen, because you managed to pick the absolute worst alternative weapon for DRK.
we already dodged a bullet on getting stuck with scythes, no need to drag the job down now with that chuunibyou junk.
IF THEY GET TO USE HAMMERS THEN THEY NEED TO DEAL BLUNT DAMAGE.
And if they do blunt damage Monk will boost tank damage. And tanks aren't aloud to DPS anymore.

Yeah, I really don't get why people pick scythes for DRK aside from the "lol look I'm so edgy" thing. From a gameplay standpoint the difference would be purely aesthetic. Hammer/Mace vs Sword at least would possibly give other differences.
The whole purpose of this request is aesthetic. Like how people request new hairstyles, and scythe isn't meant to be "lol look I'm so edgy." That's just insecurities talking. I actually just like the idea, like Magus in Chrono Trigger used.
I mean I'd be fine if they did that. However, I think a job that used only Maces for instance would be very boring visually, personally. As for the Scythes, I do hope they have something planned, because it's definitely an interesting weapon. The 2h hammers as well.They aren't likely to do this as it would restrict the available design space for new classes/jobs. Every one of those options you mentioned could instead be given to an entirely new class, and if they gave them to existing classes instead, they'd have to start going into some pretty off-the-wall places in future expansions for weaponry. While they'll probably do that sometimes (the Star Globe for AST was fairly unique, and Dancers have often used ribbon-type weapons in other FF titles), I suspect most new jobs will be using relatively familiar weaponry.

Considering MNK weapons often have sharp blades and should do stabbety-stab damage but still count as blunt damage, I'd bet that if there was a mace or hammer type weapon for PLD or WAR, it'd still count as slashing damage. It's less a damage based on weapon type/looks than based on class.
One issue with PLD getting maces, btw... it sort of veers into THM territory with their early-level scepters.
As for Archer/Bard... Crossbows? =) (Those, however, would require entirely new combat animations, due to being held in a completely different manner.)
Well, good thing the PLD is called Paladin, then, and not Sword Fighter :p
Yes, they are two different weapon types, and some animations/skills might seem odd. There are plenty of other things in this game already falling into the "seems odd" category.
Of course, they could just treat certain weapon skills as "requires sword equipped" (similar to how shield bash/lob/swipe require you to have a shield equipped), though that would immediately render those non-sword weapons useless and "glamour only". (And since glamours are just illusions anyway, it wouldn't hinder the skills IRL either. You'd just get people staring at you and wondering how the hell you stabbed someone to death with a hammer.)
...wait. Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you just say that it would be a bad idea because MNK would be able to boost tank damage if tanks had weapons that counted as blunt because damage-boosting is bad? What about NIN and WAR being able to boost tank damage as it currently is?
Also, like I said above, if SE implemented a few alternative weapons, they'd most likely go the lazy way and have all those weapons count as the "default" damage type of that class. Just like how MNK still does blunt damage despite having a couple of 10-ilm-long knives stuck to their knuckledusters...

And fyi...erm some weapons on warrior already loook like a hammer etc the dark weapon from sephirot looks like a cricket bat xD
But seriously keep the weapons as they are now....if u dont like how ur weapon looks... U can glamour over it ... Which just waste resources anyway because u will pick a weapon u like and just keep glamouring it anyway which turns this into a pointless thread really
But sure i go with having different weapon types only if u can NO longer glamour weapons anymore so that the dev team resources was not wasted that would be the only compromise i would do if i was a dev and if that was a no then i would not do it as it wastes my time as a developer because u will glamour over it anyway
Id like to see summoner maybe get the ability to use staves. kinda get tired of the book sometimes, lol
Scythe for drk won't work with the animation that the drk is using now though.
