As for tank, maybe Viking? I just don't see us getting that job anytime soon to be honest. I would also like to see a Beastmaster job wield 1-2 one-handed axes. Would love to see it as a tank as well, but might be really hard to work out.

Honestly, it's really hard to come up with ideas for tanks in general. The options are really limited, which is one reason I think not having a samurai tank(regardless if they also have a sam dps) would be a little bit of a waste, considering how tanky they can appear.

3 tank classes, 2 of which use swords. 3 melee dps classes, none of which uses swords. I just want a melee dps class/job that uses a sword. When I came back to the game recently I was a little disappointed to learn that DRK was tank only.

Red Mage with a fencing sword-problem solved.

Don't tease me with that, I considered buying ffxi just to play red mage today.

I think Blue Mage would fit it better, and healers face a similar problem as tanks in that it's hard to come up with ideas of how new healers will be. A frontline melee healer in the style of Red Mage seems like too good an opportunity to pass up. Give them slightly weaker heals than WHM, and some Phalanx as shields, along with better dps than SCH, and they're good to go.

Me too. I can envision a front line fighter mage/caster, jack of all trades DPS. I just don't want it to end up like 11 were I was simply a refresh bot and healer :/

I can't remember when but I'm pretty sure Yoship was pretty soft on the idea of adding Blue mage to this game. Thats not to say I wouldn't want BLU, but if/when either one is added they'd make a fine addition as front line dps casters.

Were kinda going into the same territory as all other new job threads seem to head, we just need to remember that no matter the outcome someone is going to be unhappy and rage about it on the forum. If SAM gets made a Tank or DPS, if RDM gets put as a DPS or Healer or even if Blue gets added but gets limited to say 20 or so monster skills all thanks to the current system people will find a way to complain about it. While I admit I still crave that sword dps no matter the flavor, more classes to me is always a plus and I can't see complaining about it myself.

For example, a Two-handed Hammer as a Tank Job's weapon can go for a more debuff type Tank with this Hammer Job combos debuffing enemies so they perform less damage on the tank or their target. It would also introduce a blunt damage Tank Job with skills focused on smashing and breaking enemy's defense and attacks through debuffs.
The weapon type does not dictate in any way what kind of abilities and attacks a job can have. A Samurai is very different than a Knight. Your idea of a hammer wielder has less uniqueness to me than a Samurai which has a very distinct look to it. A Samurai could be just as debuff focused as some guy with a big warhammer if they wanted to.

You also need to consider they're usually adding jobs that fulfill Final Fantasy iconic jobs. There is no iconic (nor requested) job that uses hammers, and most that can use hammers in some form are even more unimaginative than what you're trying to call SAM. If they throw in a new tank that deals blunt damage it throws off a lot of synergy the game already has. Keeping the tanks as slashing damage is actually a smart move from a design standpoint and helps with SE's focus on making every combination viable.

    Tanking is boring.

Why should they waste a good job like Samurai for the tank role?

I would not be surprised to see 4.0 give us talent trees, not unlike another game from long ago. It would satisfy both camps and allow for an amount of play style option. Not that I personally want that.

I would like to see a Samurai use drawout abilities to lay overlaping fields (AOE's) in melee range to buff allies and debuff mobs. Incremental tp, mp, hp regens, and combo effects that change according to stance.

So many claim that just want a sword dps, but there are so many to choose from beside the iconic Samurai. Blue mages dual wielding tulwars, dual wielding Red mage fencers, even a single blade using duelist variant of either. Perhaps even a version of the Templar that uses a hand and half sword (though i like spear/lance and shield better).
