When I was a newbie, I picked up every single class I found, just didn't touch them. probably because back then there where cross class skills, or because I just wanted the mark filled in on my charactor sheet. My wife and I started together and we had another person guiding us (with whom we are not on good speaking terms and will never be again) and for that reason I avoided what is now my favorite class in the game and probably would've never met my favorite charactor if I'd have listened to him. he'd tank for us through dungeons, and he kind of mislead us there to. "don't heal the dps" he'd say and other things. He'd also make fun of dark knights. "12 year olds" "edgelords." ect no matter how good they where. my wife eventually picked up the class and he constantly ribbed her about it, to the point where she didn't pay much attention to the story quests and dropped it at about level 40ish. wasn't untill I decided to pick it up and level it as something to do while she was at work did I realize how cool the class and story really was. We eventually got into an argument with him and started playing on our own. we got much better at things after we realized he was an idiot.

I remember when I first started playing I had my camera set up way too close to see much around me and I was walking through Central Thanalan just north of the Aetherite, suddenly I was dead. And the little KO tip pops up on my screen. I was very confused. Then I saw a cactus dance across my corpse.

I had walked too close to a cliff with a hunt mark above me. I think it was the Sabotender Ballarina. Epic death. Lol!

This is a little bit being dumb, and a more being trolled, but I laugh at it now.

Back in 2013 when I was clearing The Praetorium for the first time, someone said in the party chat that there wasn't enough magitek armor for everyone, and because I was new, I wasn't allowed to take one.... So there I was like an idiot trying to run alongside everyone and sprint to keep up because I thought there was something special people in armor were supposed to do. It wasn't till much later that I learned that there aren't a limited number of armor.

When I started as a THM, I used to think Fire II was definitely better to use than Fire I

I was guilty of a few of these for longer then i would care to admit(not knowing about the enmity bars or even the color thing, learned about focus targeting during a void ark run, a few more) but i have two specifically related to my main class(BLM) that i havent seen mentioned yet. Both were times when i inadvertently learned how to play my class better(and therefore how long id been playing wrong).

So for the longest time, i didnt realize that you could use Blizzard 3 to switch stances during a long fight. I had somehow figured out that Fire 1 was the better spam spell then Fire 3 aside from AoE situations that called for Fire 2, but i would cast until oom/lom, then transpose and wait out mana ticks(maybe with a Bliz 1 tossed in), then transpose back to fire and build my stack back up. I was doing a run of aurum vale(i think it was vale) with FC members when another BLM kindly pointed out this error. Rotation flows SO much better when you actually do it right.

Then theres Flare. I read the tooltip. Why would i want to use a spell that takes all of my mana to cast? The damage isnt even that much better then Fire 2... only like 3 times higher... im sure im better off using 3-4 fire 2s then Bliz 3 to regen just like ive been doing for so many levels. Fast forward. Running the Aery with a group of DF randos. I say im new. Everything goes fine. We get to the big 30 wyvern fight right before the final boss. One of the guys tells me to use Flare for this fight. Um... ok. Its worthless, but ok. They pull. I cast flare. Im out of mana. Transpose. Wait for mana. Flare. Transpose. Guy calls me an idiot and says im doing it wrong(doesnt say anything other then im dumb and wrong - no useful information). Im not the idiot who even suggested using Flare in the first place. Youre the one who doesnt know anything(i might have only thought this and not typed it). Anyway, we finish the dungeon without any more chatter. I come online half to complain about this guy and half to see if there is actually a situation where Flare is useful. An hour of research later and my AoE rotation is forever changed. To that random DF jerk(who i do remember being a jerk, but whos class and server are long forgotten) from like 3 and a half years ago, you were right that Flare is a great spell and that i wasnt using all of my kit correctly. But if you think thats a good way to teach a new player how to improve then you are a f-ing moron.

Back when I started the game with the launch of ARR we still got bonus-stat-points to put into the mainstats. Ideally you wanted to put all of them into the mainstat of your job, obviously. Being the newbie-paladin I was though, I read through all the stat-descriptions and... spend points into everything.

Piety? Sure, I'm using MP, gimme those MP!
Mind? Well, I got Cure, it will be useful to have those extra points, right?
Dex? It says here that it increases the amount of healing I get, so thats good! - This is actually a follow-up mistake because dex never increased the amount of healing you recived, only the amount you healed yourself... I thought I'd be making myself easier to heal by putting points into dex... I didnt...

In the end the bonus-points didnt matter to much, sure - but I felt very, very silly when I finally figured out how wrong I was about my spending and bought a book to put 20 of the into strength and 10 into vit or so...

I also remember my first dungeon-run - and that I was to "afraid" to roll on the loot, because I didnt felt like I deserved any of it. Or thought that the other people in the party might have a better use for it - despite it being stuff for my class... a friend had to basically make me roll on upgrades for my little gladiator, explaining that it was totally fine if I took that shield.

(I had also picked up the gladiator as my starting class without knowing that it was a tank. Mainly because I had no idea that there is something like a "tank" or what a tank does... first MMO and so on...)

It took me TWO YEARS to realize that Sole Survivor was meant to be used on enemies and not your allies (I never put it on my bar because I was like "Why would I know when a party member is going to die?"). To this day, I still forget that it's even a skill that's available because of how long I neglected it.

I didn't carefully read the limit break popup when I was first leveling, and for some reason I thought it was an individual thing not a party wide thing. Leveling black mage it wasn't really an issue. Nobody ever complained that I used the lb whenever I wanted in dungeons. And i was either always the one to use it or didn't notice that other people using it drained the gauge.

Then I get to the Chrysalys, where the party wanted to use the lb3 during the transition phase in the other room. I used meteor as soon as the lb 3 gauge filled and got chewed out for it. Though, once I apologized and explained my misunderstanding, people were cool with it, and from that day forward I've been more thoughtful about limit break usage.

When I first played DRK, I also somehow got the idea in my head that because darkside halted mp regeneration, it halted ALL mp regen, and that you were supposed to activate it, burn through your mp, then turn it off to regen it. Thankfully my error was pointed out to me before I hit 70. And now I never turn it off.

I told someone that as a healer I wished I could still see what a boss was doing even when I targeted a player.

Thankfully my error was pointed out to me before I hit 70. And now I never turn it off.

That's exactly how I understood it at first too... I honestly think the wording could be updated to be less confusing.
