I only recently realized actions on the hotbar are categorized as spells, weaponskills, and abilities...
Thanks for helping make the FFXIV community a fun and welcoming place. If you're not sure you have (and you very likely have), make it a point to be patient or helpful the next time you log in so that you can know you've made a difference.
If you're on the Aether data center, congratulations! I might be your nextexciting adventurehealer in the Duty Finder. Please look forward to it.
when I first started playing, I played black mage, I just cast blizzard 1 repeatedly, I never used fire as it used up MP and I saw no reason why I should use it when I can just use blizzard all the time which cost no MP, I didn't understand how the class worked and how I needed to alternate between blizzard and fire, it took me a few levels before I worked it out.
For months after i first start playing ARR, i was convinced camp bluefog, was actually camp bluefrog.
It wasn't till an fc member of a new fc asked me where camp blue frog was since i kept mentioning it, i told him and he pointed out it was fog not frog.
We argued for almost 10 mins before he told me open the teleport window and spell it out for him. >.< (the sheepish silence aftewards was deafening) LOL
It took me almost 2 months before I figured out how to put role actions, and general GcD on hotbar...not kidding....try going to dungeon with no rampart or LB as dps = votekick
I've been playing for a year, I've had an apartment for about 8 of those 12 months and I only recently found out furinture can be dyed.
It blew my goddamned mind. Like, a proper galaxy brain mindblow.
Holy crap, I thought I was the only one who called it that. For months after i first start playing ARR, i was convinced camp bluefog, was actually camp bluefrog.

I probably don’t have as many mistakes and derp moments as I would have had, since I had a friend who got me into this game and who taught me most of the basics. But I still had my moments.
I started in late 2015, and I decided on BRD because I thought the AF1 looked super cool. When I started leveling, I thought Straight Shot was better than Heavy Shot because I would see an auto-attack hit and thought SS did 2 hits over the 1 hit Heavy Shot did. I used SS almost exclusively until level 60 when I happened to read a BRD guide saying HS was the better choice.
I also never used Hawk’s Eye or Barrage, thinking to myself “But I already hit targets with 100% accuracy. Why do I need +15% accuracy?”, not realizing that DEX was also my main damaging stat and HE was primarily used for that damage boost. For some reason, I didn’t think that Barrage hitting a target “three times” was particularly useful (since I thought SS hit it twice and didn’t see the need to upkeep Barrage+SS for just one extra hit).
I never touched Flaming Arrow because I had no idea what a <t> macro was and got annoyed trying to place it.
I hated the old Wanderer’s Minuet, and refused to use it until well into Patch 3.2 (I had been level 60 for some time). Then I was informed that, while it was an adjustment, it also gave me a 30% damage boost and access to Empyreal Arrow and Iron Jaws. I used to never see the need for IJ because “I can just reapply my DoTs manually so who cares”. Oh, I also didn’t use any role actions until around this time either. It wasn’t until now that I used EA, since it used to be locked to Minuet. Before, I was like “Well, all my other skills still work outside of Minuet, so who cares if I can’t use Empyreal Arrow”.
I also never used Quick Nock or Wide Volley because I didn’t like how my TP went down so fast.
I’m embarrassed to recall these lolBRD moments of mine lol. I actively started using all my stuff (and learned what a <t> macro was) around when Patch 3.3 hit lol.
Some other ones:
—I used to spam Fire II and Fire III on BLM as I got them. Because I thought “Fire II is stronger than Fire I, and Fire III is stronger than both of those!”. A friend I met later on that played BLM politely corrected me, and I actually started reading tooltips at that point (roughly late 3.2/early 3.3). Same with the Blizzard spells.
—I started on PS3 (and eventually moved to PS4), and I didn’t know anything about the Extended crossbar. So I tried to macro my combos on DRK when I first leveled it until I was informed about the Extended cross (and about how bad macros in this game are for combo jobs).
—I was terrible at juggling Cleric Stance and healing/DPSing when I first started playing healers. I frequently ended up healing in Cleric because I would panic and forget to turn it off, or I would smash it repeatedly so it would turn off and then immediately re-enable itself.
—I used to heal only with Cure I and only use Cure II when I got a Freecure proc. I also thought Cure III was better than both of them and loved using the old Overheal proc because “free heal”. I never touched Benediction because “it has such a long cooldown how can that be useful” (this was back when it was 300s).
—I thought AST cards were confusing, and for the longest time didn’t use them because I couldn’t remember what each one did (outside of Balance, so I would use only that card and just let the other ones expire after Drawing them).
—Someone told me that Sacred Soil was useless and that I should heal with Adlo, so I deleted Soil and Physick off of my SCH bars until I realized Adlo cost significantly more MP. Was still really bad about using Soil for the longest time, but this was before I started dipping into raiding and harder content, so perhaps that wasn’t too big of a derp. >.> Also, I just kept my fairy on Obey because I didn’t know how to activate her abilities (or that pet abilities could be found under a separate category in the Actions & Traits menu).
Yeah a lot of these are really embarrassing to think about lol.
EDIT: Forgot this one, but I did have the infamous “Repelling Shot off of the Titan platform” back in the day. I think that’s a rite of passage for baby BRDs.
Also, not really a mistake, but just a funny derp: while leveling RDM this expansion, I used Displacement on one of the bosses and backflipped out of the boss room right as the gate sealed. I was like LOL OMG SORRY GUYS. Because I didn’t want them to think I was trying to not participate.

One more thing I remembered, Ramuh.
I thought Ramuh was a giant floating nutsack for several months until my friend pointed out he's a human.
