I played FFXI at release but quit at about level 19 because I sucked at the game and couldn't get any higher than that (comes with being so young at the time, I think).

This mirrors my experience very closely. Right down to the blackmage... though my older sister was playing a WHM, so I didn't have the nightmare waiting-for-groups experience.
