Newer player with a few questions.

    Hey guys

So I've a group of 8-10 people who are coming from wow in the downtime between expansions. We all decided to raid on ffxiv. I'm the raid leader/GM etc etc. My main question revolves around what I should play. I usually prefer the easier classes so I can keep my eyes up and make call out easier etc.

I've leveled a pugilist up so far and I realize they may be difficult to keep up GL and the other buffs while making call outs.

So after all that. Are there any suggestions out there? I don't have any kind of preference ranged or melee. All the classes look fun in some aspect.

    Thanks for any help guys.

It's the same as wow. It's easier for call maker to be Tank or Healer. Ranged isn't bad either. depends on the level of play.
It's a different question to ask what class is fun to play. you'll end up playing them all if you plan on spending a decent amount of time here.

Hands down the easiest Job to play while making call-outs and watching the field is Paladin. The rotation is rote and simple, cooldown rotation is set it and forget it. You barely need to pay attention to what you're doing and you can still pull optimal dps for your Job.

I don't think any of the DPS classes would be quite as easy to do that with.

That said, if you get enough practice with any Job and commit the rotation to memory, you'll be able to do call-outs with any Job. Just some are easier to reach that point than others. I've done it on DRG (with ~2 years experience on the Job) and managed to do it reasonably well with delayed CDs here and there. Did it with PLD (<1 year experience at the time) and missed nothing at all.

So it's up to your ability to learn a Job and what role you intend to play. There's good guides out there for every dps Job, and I suggest sitting down for a significant amount of time at 60 just slapping dummies until you don't even need to think about your rotation anymore.

Though, since this is DPS forums, I'm assuming you're intending on DPS. Therefore:

    - Ranged -
Summoner/Arcanist has a lot of upkeep. Nearly impossible to do that well while calling things out.
Black Mage/Thaumaturge has a pretty rote rotation, but very precise upkeep.
Bard/Archer has procs here and there, but is otherwise rather rote. All about cooldown management.
Machinist is intricate and heavily proc-based.

    - Melee -
Dragoon/Lancer has a rather rote rotation, but with positional procs every 5 gcds.
Monk/Pugilist has a rote rotation, but fraught with positionals.
Ninja/Rogue has a more fluid rotation than either other and Ninjutsu every 20s that require a modicum of attention.

I usually tank in wow. But you do make some good points and have me leaning back toward tanking. I was thinking of doing something different here in ffxiv

Tank or healer would be easiest.
    That or Bard.

Also note you can play every class in the game on one character once you hit lv 10. Just need to join the guild for that class and equip the weapon. Each class has separate levels

We use to "share" the duty in our team so everyone brings in ideas and strategy but the main part of calls is on the WAR and me (SCH). Some bits does our BRD.
For Ideal callout it is truely PLD because of a simple rotation.
Hardest are probs NIN (mudra lag still exists) or DRG/MCH/SMN due all the cooldowns.

As a SMN I don't find too many difficulties with callouts but I only do them when absolutely necessary. Otherwise I focus on dealing damage. I type during the cast-times, while using a ps4 controller and a usb keyboard. Any time I begin typing, it switches to chat mode, allowing me to type quickly and then keep hitting the buttons. It's not exactly easy but it works if the situation calls for it.

On PS4 myself so I know how it works. Still it is easier for classes mentioned. You miss out on some points DPS if you do typing / callout on cooldown heavy classes that is no offense.
Our DRG used to be raidlead/callout but gave up on that. He is now 100+ DPS higher.
I do A5 callout for bombs and push em myself and with latency that can be horror. My healdeeps is currently utter shite since my internet started trolling me 3 weeks ago and I get skillreset (FU sticky CS).

Yeah if I can trust someone else to do callouts I will. While it doesn't affect my dps by much I do realize it does lower it, even if I'm only typing during casts. As for latency.... I know thine pain. I've had the fortune of not having it during the high level raids but the net begins trolling me during the final boss of dungeons most time. Got 3 near disconnects on Fenrir right as he was using Lunar Cry. Painful endings..

Callouts really should be done over voice chat.
