Marauder/Warrior NEW TO MMO Tank Help Please!

    Hey all,

Aquiring and maintaining aggro in big groups in dungeons but sometimes people get super pissed at me and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Most recent dungeon lvl 28. Want to be a better player, any advice appreciated.

    My Character: Maurader/Warrior Lvl33
    My Strategy:

I now have Defiance and since it gives good bonus to tank I turn it on, then turn on foresight, then proceed to...

    1. Attack center of mob target with tomahawk which pulls mob
    2. Overpower entire mob once or twice
    3. Basically attack target using combo (1: Heavy Swing 2: Skull Sunder 3: Butcher's Block) or (1: Heavy Swing 2: Maim) and watch enemies to see if I lose aggro
    4. To maintain aggro, I throw in Berserk and Overpower Once in a while, and while Berserk cools down use Flash.
    5. If I do lose aggro on an enemy, I target it with Tomahawk until it regain aggro

    Do this until mob dies

it works out pretty well for me, there are some cases where I'll lose a member of the mob and try to use Tomahawk to regain aggro and it simply wont come back until it dies or until I attack it from close quarters and by then the mob is too close to my party members and I begin to lose control. But even when this happens its only momentarily

Sounds like you're doing pretty well for that level. You can try an extra Overpower if you lose a mob, it has an OK range. Eventually, you'll want to level Gladiator for the cross class ability Provoke for those times you lose hate on a mob. You'll also /need/ provoke later in the game when certain areas require tank swaps. Staying in Defiance is a very good move as well. At level 29, you'll be able to equip full Vitality accessories, and you should do this. I think they're Sphene at that level.

Thanks, that helps. Yeah I feel like I'm doing great but occasionally a player (usually more experienced) literally goes out of their way to tell me how bad of a job I did via emotes and such. I really love the game but its frustrating when I don't know what I'm doing wrong

Don't pay much attention to people who just give you shit without offering advice. They most likely don't know how to play the job themselves but like to talk a big game about how big their epeen is. DO listen to the folks that give some helpful advice. If someone is coming down really hard on you, you can report them for harassment, and you can initiate a vote kick if they are extremely negative.

They might be a melee complaining about positionals if you move around too much.

But yeah you seem to be doing very well. Also you don't need to use berserk only on overpower it is a damage increase buff that lasts for some 20 s so you can use your other skills there as well.

if you have free time get your gladiator to 22.(you'll want to level it higher for awareness but later down the road) get provoke, and use it on a lost mob then do your tomahawk. You pretty much got it but provoke is a must have later on and will save you from doing several tomahawks on a lost mob. Other than that you got the rotation down for what you need to be doing, just perfect the lost mob(get provoke, you'll thank me later)

As other's have said, provoke is a necessity, so it may be good to go and get that now rather than waiting. In the scenario where a lost mob goes away and you're wailing away with tomahawk, that tells me you let the DPS get too far on their aggro. A single tomahawk should be plenty to retake aggro as you have a multiplier for your enmity with Defiance on. If it's not enough, you either didn't notice the mob was taken from you a bit earlier, or you're under-geared (and your DPS is likely very on point, which leads to them being more likely to be snippy anyways).

Overall, what you are doing works, but here's a few additional tips if you aren't doing them. One, using foresight a slight bit after grabbing the mobs is better imo. You end up not wasting any of it, whereas you proc'ing it before grabbing the mob is a few seconds it's not helping you. It's not a huge deal though, but you should be fine without NEEDING foresight right at the beginning.
You should also be rotating your targets between hits and prioritizing the high enmity generating hits on targets that are taking the most dmg from your DPS. Constantly tabbing through your targets will help you keep an eye on their enmity meters anyways. If you notice 3 targets all on the cusp of being taken from you, I'd suggest overpowering 2 or 3 more times just to establish your aggro (you could just do one if you are very good at rotating and prioritizing, but until you get the hang of it, better safe than sorry).

If you didn't realize the aggro meters, you can see your parties aggro to the left of their name in the party list at the top left (unless you moved your HUD). If you notice you got a good lead on aggro on everything, start focusing on your highest dmg attacks (which for WAR is also your enmity generator at that level). Also, if you happen to have your brutal swing stun available, I often use that on a mob if I notice 2 are close to being lost. Those few seconds of them stunned often gives me enough time to reestablish aggro on both targets.

Once you get a little higher in level, things will become much easier as your move set grows and becomes more versatile. As a tank though, it's important to upkeep your gear close to your level. 5 levels at MOST is what I would say. Anymore and you'll likely be losing aggro to your DPS if they kept up on their gear and they are maximizing their dmg. And while it is better to not waste through your TP, don't be afraid to let loose a few more overpower's if you need it (if your DPS are constantly taking from you).

Also, marking targets may help you. This will (hopefully) let your teammates prioritize your priority target and you'll be able to hold much more efficiently. Sometimes you get teammates who will disregard though, so don't ignore the other mobs just because you have a mark if you see this. But that should make it easier if they follow. Often, DPS targeting separate targets makes things difficult. While being able to help deal dmg to the mobs is great for a tank, your first priority should always remain holding aggro on the mob.

Hello friend, Please remember you can use flash as a supplementary form of aoe aggro and it will alleviate some of the tp struggles you may have during bigger and faster pulls.

important to know that the skill Skull Sunder, Butcher's Block give you the most aggro!!! so in small groups of mobs like 3 use this skills between the adds, is better than overpower or flash or any other aggro skills.
so when you see you have aggro problems on single target start do first this aggro combo one or 2 times before you use strom path combo.
on big groups is berserk and overpower should the best but only worth on 3+ mobs.
skull sunder and butcher block give enough aggro to let you tank in deliverance in endgame content when you know the timings when to use it.
you also can use secound wind it helps little bit to hold aggro.

    regards small hobbit
