Queue for DF While Using Chocobo

Has there been any explanation or reasoning on why you cannot queue for a dungeon while using your chocobo?

As a dps, the queue times are long enough that most would like to go do something while waiting. For some of us leveling that would include questing which seems to be a great opportunity to use your chocobo. I would love it if I could queue for a dungeon, quest with my chocobo, then have the chocobo automatically dismiss when the queue pops (or have a pop up telling me to dismiss). There really seems no reason NOT to allow this and it seems like something most MMORPGs would have solved as an unnecessary limitation.

I think we've been asking for this since 2.0/launch. Not sure why chocobos have to count as a party member when they use very simple AI like a pet, except you cant control them or place them. Makes no sense besides some coding issue where you can only have 1 pet out at a time or something.

Good question, and this should be counted also for some other other activities too (like, you can't do instanced quests while you queue: not the biggest issue but it would definitely be a nice addition).

I swear I always forget that I can use my chocobo, since that I constantly queue for dungeons and pvp and while I do so I can't bring him out for anything relevant, rendering him useless for me (keyword here being: for me. I'm sure others don't queue as much as I do).

I don't know anyway, I suppose we'll get this fixed in 4.0. Maybe!

Yeah.. It's sucky. We should be able to use our chocobos in nearly all instances we solo. Or allow them to level quicker. All I know to do is stable your chocobo and train him real quick before queueing to make the most use of the downtime.

They gave a valid reason as to why this can't happen but I forget what it was. Something to do with the separate instances of a duty and having the chocobos in your party. It would be nice though.

Valid, but perhaps unreasonable. It can very likely be worked around, and considering how long it's been an issue (since 2.0 launch) they've had ample time to chip away at it. They have excuses for why it is the way it is, but not for why it hasn't been fixed by now.

Baseless Speculation: It's probably one of two things or a combination of them.

Possible Reason #1
The game only has one player pet "Slot" to use that's pretty deeply embedded in some core part of the games code. When they introduced Chocobo companions they had a decision to make: Have them use the pet slot and make them mutually exclusive with ACN/SMN/SCH pets or make them a pseudo-character in a party to keep them compatible. In the interest of fairness and not causing any feature confusion they opted for the latter.

Possible Reason #2
The systems for using Pets/Minions relies on references to some kind of static game resource. The chocobos have talent trees, variable stats and equipment. It may mean that this can't fit cleanly into whatever the "Pet" data construct is and so the birds are just full on characters server-side that get pulled in and put in your party when you summon them. If this is so the hurdles associated with making them not full party members would be non-trivial and having a full "Character" swap in and out of your party while in the DF Queue probably wreaks havoc with their group building algorithm.


This is a pretty obvious QoL thing so I can't imagine it wasn't on their radar. It's definitely some kind of technical hurdle and I think something along the line of those two are most likely, but again it's rather baseless speculation.
