Ticking E in your DF options doesn't mean that you will, or even can speak english. It just means that you're fine with having english speaking people in your group. That's all it does. Also, there's no way for anyone in the group to know what you ticked, which is why people don't care about this system and tick whatever just to improve queue times... but I have a feeling that I'm not teaching you anything new, am I? Feel free to make another thread if you want to complain about that, because at this point, it's irrelevant to the topic we're writing in now.
Besides, the OP said to his group "I'm German, I speak french". No matter how you look at it, it makes no sense to then proceed to ask 3 other people to change from french to english if everyone is known to be speaking french.

Whatever the case, all of that thread is pointless. It just shows that the OP said he was understanding french, but he completly misunderstood something in french and my guess is to say that it snowballed from there, the OP thinking he was being insulted, while he wasn't.

Edit: That guy gets it, even if this issue might need a topic for itself:

The suggestion is for DF to notify us of which language(s) is/are common to the group. It wouldn't help if people are simply being rude, but at least it would allow players who want to be polite about it to know what constitutes being polite.

There is some of these people on my server. Always trolling and acting like...well, yeah...way worse then what you described. Think, mid 30 year olds shouting at hunts in dire need of validation and attention. It is really sad.

I won't say names because they'd enjoy the attention, but anyway all you can do is remove yourself from the situation/blacklist/ignore. If they insult you then you call a GM and they get suspended. I've done it many times with success with these people lol.

Every French person I met in my data center always did terrible things like healer with gatherer gear, PLD who didn't use flash, or anything. only one of my entire DF did normal things.

We can deduct that the French players queued up with at least French and English selected based on what the OP says. The French players would have known that the OP speaks at least English, and possibly any other language the French people had selected. Then the OP says, and this is a direct quote: I speak french. At this point it's not wrong for the French players to assume that the OP does indeed speak French. They have no way of knowing if the OP had selected F (or D or J) in the options but they now know he speaks French. In this light, why should the French players speak English when to their knowledge they are understood in French as well? It's not like the OP was asking politely either...

By the way I'm glad this thread got pruned a little.

I dunno, I've played many MMOs, and FFXIV has been one of my worst experiences community wise.

I don't think such strict server restrictions to only allowing cross server communication in performance heavy content helps things. I have personal guesses about other reasons, but I won't mention those here.

I was under the impression that ticking a language under the DF didn't mean that you actually were fluent in the language, but rather that you accepted playing with people of that language. Hence why I select them all. For a standard roulette, communication is rarely an issue.

Also, for an odd reason, I'm a quebecer (meaning French is my native language) and my past MMO experiences, as a whole, were always the least enjoyable with french-speaking people for some reason... I'm not drawing conclusions but that is my past experience over a dozen years of playing FFXI, Aion and FFXIV.

There is a way to see what languages people tick. Either its in the Party List tab or in their search info.

    Just FYI.

Edit: All in all though, you're right about it snowballing, I guess he just had a bad experience. I hope you have a better one next time

Actually, there is. It's listed on the right in the party info.

Search info also works, as someone else mentioned.

I've always been under the impression that if you tick off a language and then end up in a group speaking that language, they had a right to expect to be able to communicate with you at least somewhat. You know, so that group performance wouldn't be hindered by a language barrier.
