We can deduct that the French players queued up with at least French and English selected based on what the OP says. The French players would have known that the OP speaks at least English, and possibly any other language the French people had selected. Then the OP says, and this is a direct quote: I speak french. At this point it's not wrong for the French players to assume that the OP does indeed speak French. They have no way of knowing if the OP had selected F (or D or J) in the options but they now know he speaks French. In this light, why should the French players speak English when to their knowledge they are understood in French as well? It's not like the OP was asking politely either...
