Is a fully melded 220 crafted gear better than 240 one?

Just out of curiosity tbh. I see a lot of people running with fully melded ilvl 220 gear even thou some of them have already cleared some of the Midas savage.

That's entirely dependant on the gear in question and the job.

Also do you know for sure these people even got a drop for their job? I've cleared A5S 4 times now and haven't obtained a single piece.

Also keep in mind that sometimes people don't use the gear immediately due to having to keep accuracy cap

depends on the stat weights for the class but i don't think that 220 melded can even be better than 240, maybe better than some 230 (like ring of aiming for ex, fully melded is great) but then again it depends on the stat weights for each class.

220 melded might be better than 230, but almost surely wont be better than 240.

Healers can be an exception however.

Pentamelded accuracy gear can be more valuable during progression to ensure healers can DPS effectively

Also lets them slot in VIT while not sacrificing accuracy. For DPS, it would take an extreme difference in secondary stats for an i220 piece to outweigh an i240 one. Tank accessories are a bit more possible since you can get Parry + Accuracy (Parry being completely useless for damage and accuracy being completely useless if you already have enough), but the large amount of health you lose from downgrading isn't worth it for the minor increase in damage.

The reason people use i220 over i240 is usually either:

    1. Holding out for a Midas piece or
    2. Accuracy issues

You would really have to get into the stat weights, but I doubt it. Secondaries are weaker than in 2.0, so if they are better, it's by a smaller margin. But as said above, when slotting things like ACC, they come in handy and can be considered better for healer dps. Being stronger, but missing everything is weaker in the end.

A good example of this is the Midan Earring of Aiming. My NIN doesn't need accuracy and skill speed is our lowest weight secondary stat. The 230 lore earring is easily superior.

And yeah, RNG is RNG. I just got my scouting belt with 6 weeks worth of tokens. I was using crafted till this weekly reset myself. Also, just because a group is clearing a5 doesn't mean they are clearing a6-8, the difficulty curve is pretty intense even going from a5-a6.

If you're curious how items compare I suggest checking out Ariyala's website. It will give you a fair estimate of what "weight" gear has. 9/10 times higher ilvl = better because your main stat has the most value but it's surprising how much good secondaries like crit can add up on some pieces.

20 item levels is big enough to always be better. 10 item levels can sometimes be debateable, but 20 is pretty massive.

It's not like you just get gear the instant you clear savage, your pieces have to actually drop. :P (Or you have to clear it 4 to 6 times and not many groups have had time to do that yet)

Depends on the class and pieces. While I'm planning to use the 240 lore hands on my sch, I will be using the crafted ones for a long time as I would be losing too much accuracy if I switched to the 230 lore, and I don't feel the increase in other stats makes up for it. My static just cleared a6s this week, we may not down a7s for a couple weeks more due to time constraints and obviously the dps will be getting their upgrades first. I would have to wait 4 weeks from the time we clear to upgrade my gloves... and that's assuming I get lucky and my pants drop in those 4 weeks.
I'm also planning on keeping my pentamelded ring. I like my acc and crit.

As for the comment in the OP... aside from "they might not have gotten drops for their job yet", they could also be playing other jobs. I raid as sch so I'm obviously not getting 240 pieces for my blm any time soon.
