Question about dungeon loot vs exp

    Good evening!

I'm the type that REALLY likes to have the best gear available for my level range, but also like gear/arms that I don't have to upgrade as frequently. Especially if it's something that I find aesthetically pleasing, so bring on the dungeon loot

No guarantees with DL though, and so I kind of wonder how long to repeat dungeons before it isn't even worth it anymore? I hopped out of Brayflox leaving the Battle Mage's gloves behind @lv35, and I did so when I unlocked Qarn knowing my next upgrade would be in there.

I heard of people doing runs well into the double digits trying to get what they have their sights on, and I'd imagine these players leveling way past its worth during that time? When this gear is going to become obsolete anyway as I head towards 50-60, how much value would you place on these drops?

Those rerunning dungeons multiple times to get a certain loot is probably glamour hunting. Personally if you out level a dungeon I think it's best to move on unless you're disgustingly undergeared. GC sells gear sets all the way up
the level bracket until level 50 (for now) so you can use that to replace an under geared piece. You could also ask a friend to craft you HQ gear since low level stuff isn't hard to make. Unless you're after for glamour, I wouldn't bother out leveling a dungeon just for a piece of gear that will get replaced in the next dungeon.

The only gear I've repeatedly farmed a dungeon for was Brayflox because you didn't need to upgrade until around Stone Vigil (lvl 41). Brayflox was farmed before the dungeons gave decent xp, if that gives you any indication of how good the gear was. Pink items just serve their purpose to get you to the next tier.

At lvl 45 you get your class artifact gear (minus chest piece). But honestly Dzemael Darkhold set is better and sometimes nicer looking, depending on your class. It's not uncommon to see new players with their artifact gear and the Darkhold chest piece all the way until 50. Once you hit 50, you get a full left side set of i90.

The only dungeon drops I would worry about getting, are the greens from Brayflox and Darkhold. If they're way below your lvl, don't worry about it.

Yeah, I was thinking exactly as you are telling me. I stay in the dungeon until I hit the level for the next dungeon and just hope for the best. And that is currently where I am at with Qarn. I would love to leave this place with the arms, and the armor pieces for my whm and sch as they will last me until 45 when I get my AF. For fill-in-the-gaps I have a very supportive FC who makes the HQ versions or purchasable gear. Obviously, doing other things like story quests, side quests, leves, and the like will reduce the amount of runs I go. It's honestly about two runs per dungeon, per job.

Cutter's Cry is next on my hit list, and I really want the hat and body piece that drops in that dungeon. There is a glamour value in those for me, so I might stick it out there a little longer and avoid other means of exp gains if unlucky. I need to look into Darkhold.

When I first played the game, I spammed Brayflox over and over to get the battlemage robe, because I liked how it looked that much... when I finally got it I was almost lv45.

I definitely don't recommend doing that though. I guess I stumbled through somehow without too much difficulty as I was overlevelled for a good portion of the msq and got better gear from quests... that won't work if you've already finished the msq obviously and you're working on an alt job.

If you're diligent enough however you'll be replacing gear very quickly so trying to get a full/near full set from each dungeon is a waste. Get what you can while levelling, if you have bad luck and can't seem to get a replace a certain piece for more than 5 levels you can buy one from your GC or get an hq crafted one. If you want a particular piece for glamour you can get it at your leisure later, running the dungeon unsynced.

You can also at level 50 purchase an entire 115 set from the npc in ishgard. Also if you still have multiple classes yet to level I would suggest getting sets of HQ crafted gear with some cheap materia attached to it. They can be used while leveling multiple classes and will ensure you have the best gear at your level.

@Vele, I hear you. I felt fortunate that I obtained 4/6 Battle Mage pieces by the time I left Brayflox. They are very nice pieces to obtain. I am very attentive with my exp gains. I don't want to level too quickly and won't allow my character to get too far ahead of the msq or optional dungeon level. I try to keep it parallel tbh, but I can see sticking around for the glamour, or if you have another class/job that can utilize the loot once it gets to that level.

Lv 50 is honestly pretty far off for me. If gear is aesthetically pleasing, I will actually slow down the exp gains even more lol. But what it really comes down to is abilities are typically gained in 4-5 level increments, and gear is upgraded in a similar fashion. I repeat the dungeon runs so much on each job to get better with my new abilities and hope to get the loot. I just don't want to stay in any dungeon too long. Feels like your 5th year in high school

To be honest, Brayflox is the only dungeon I would specifically farm for its gear throughout the leveling process. It's only 3 specific sets of gear that you're after in there (Cavalry, Infantry, Battlemage) so it's not TOO hard to acquire, and it pretty much lasts you until AF level (45-50).

If you obtain enough GC seals though and you are still having no trouble staying ahead of the leveling curve for MSQ, I'd say sod that and just use GC gear.

If it's your first class to 60 I would say just level up like normal and don't bother with trying to BiS your way to the goal. The time spent farming doesn't really match the power of the dungeon gear relative to the same level items you get from quests or vendors. After your first 60 though it's a lot easier to level subsequent classes with superior gear since you'll have easier ways to obtain HQ crafted equipment, you'll be able to solo dungeons for sets like Foestriker's and Infantry, and you'll have more ways to obtain company seals for GC equipment.

People are doing it for the style not the xp. They are looking for particular gear styles. If you are just trying to level dont repeat dungeons, just do main storyline quests and side quests.
