Do I understand correctly that breeding own raised and trained birds aka doing it the hard way is a pointless waste of time as I will always get 2* birds and training also has no effect on the stars??

Short answer is yes.
Long answer in there https://ffxivchocoboracing.wordpress...gory/breeding/
I've personally decided to breed out a few inferior 2* stats early and breed the rest out around p6 or 7. Lower ranked races are a lot easier to win when the majority of your races are all against npcs still.

Lower pedigree Chocobos also level up faster, so breeding out crap stats early can be a time saver. Also, only breed your chocobos with one that is 1 pedigree higher or its a waste of mgp. P9 bought breeding chocobos and P2 bought breeding chocobos can have the same number of stars, breeding stats are based on rng, not pedigree.
