Um all i know is it changes from astral to umbral depending on the events in the world, if some huge " OMG WE'RE ALL GOING DIE" event was averted then i guess they change it.

Depends on how long it took for you to get to and beat castrum (in game time), plus five years. Do it in a day and it's five years and one day. Do it in 2000 days...And Minfilia is really old all of a sudden.

Umbral Eras start when there's a Rejoining. Astral Eras start when historians (or politicians) decide when the umbral era ended.

That ^ Eras always go from umbral to astral, and it was 5 years between the 7th ones, we moved from the 6th astral to 7th umbral with meteor/Bahamut, and to 7th astral after we killed Gaius and Ultima, halting the Garlean threat again.

We likely won't see an 8th umbral within the next few years/expansions until they decide to pull another near destruction of the realm.
