Alt-aholic. I typically forego a couple gear sets each tier (healer/caster this time), and then just go with whatever gives the most ilvl/weight gain for any of my jobs after that. Main and playable alts are only 5 ilvl off. Haven't been raiding this tier, though, so I've cared more about being able to attend PFs on pretty much any job I want than maxing out any one.

Maining is great because it's nice to know a class inside and out and pushing it to it's limit. It's nice to have something to focus on when getting gear, but the best part of having a main is the more you use it, the better you'll get with it.

The downside of using one class alot is when you try to use Huton on a Paladin.

There's nothing wrong with maining one job but also there's nothing wrong with not having a main declared. You can learn a job inside and out by just playing the game for hundreds of hours as well so maining one isn't necessarily a requirement for that. The issue with not having a main is deciding what 1 job to allocate all your tomes towards because you only really have enough time between patches to gear 1 job up fully with the latest tome gear and usually a 2nd job is nearly completed by the time a new set of gear rolls out.

I'm just trying to get my Summoner main leveled. After I have upgraded as much as I can I at lvl 60 my intent is to pick up a melee job as an alternate and level it. I haven't decided if it will be on the same toon or a new one but for me historically it has always been easier to pick a job I like and finish to leveling it then switch to an alt job or jobs and level it/them.

I main Bard only, it gets all my attention first

but I also enjoy playing Scholar quite a bit, it's secondary.

Ever since they changed Bard in 3.0, I slowly stopped playing it. Now I mostly just play WHM. To be honest, the changes to Bard have slowly killed XIV for me and I'll probably end up taking a break soon unless some new story content arrives.

Why does one class getting changed kill the game for you?, i don't understand this.

Currently I've still only got Monk to 60 as far as battle classes. I'll eventually get SCH and WHM to 60 and SCH will be prioritized above WHM.

If you're having trouble picking a main.. Well.. Try to ask yourself what playstyle you want.

    Do you wanna be supportive/not supportive? Single target/AOE? mitigating/reactive heals? buffing? defensive/offensive? melee/ranged? caster/physical?

There's gotta be something you learn towards.

Scholar "main"here. I use the top tier gear for my healers. Then the second grade down from that for my bard, and then i play a casual tank and just use dungeon stuff for that.
I pretty much play whatever i feel like at the moment.

I main NIN overall, but would meddle with PLD/DRK as an alternative. When looking for a raid group, I have no issues being PLD/DRK main in that group while still using NIN for everything else.

    *EDIT*
Lately, I've been on DRK more than PLD. Only thing that kills from playing DRK over PLD full time is Sephiroth Ex. Basically, if I'm MT'ing as DRK against Sephirot, and we're not at the 65% mark by the time none of my three defensive CDs are up (Foresight, Shadowskin, Shadow Wall), I usually die during or right after the 4th tank buster in Phase 1. As PLD, I have Foresight, Rampart, Sentinel, Sheltron, and Bulwark to survive the 4th Tank Buster and beyond.

I tried to look up text-based strats for phase 1 for DRK on Sephirot but haven't found anything outside of guides simply saying to pop a CD each time. So, if anyone knows a text-based guide for phase 1 tank busters for DRK on what to do for the 4th tank buster, please link me to it.
