    *sighs* Not this thread again...

Look, it's been discussed plenty of times in the past - FFXIV was developed with the emphasis on accessibility, especially making the game available to as many players as possible, meaning they wanted the game to run well on the widest possible selection of hardware, including low-end computers (case in point: although officially the minimum requirements for FFXIV ARR is Windows Vista, I can confirm it runs extremely well on even a low-end machine still running Windows XP Service Pack 3 with a measly 2gb of RAM and a video card from 7 years ago.). You simply would not have seen the 5 million+ subscribers ARR has if SE limited their focus to those with $5000 top-of-the-heap gaming rigs. SE tried making FFXIV more for high end graphic-intensive machines once before and... well, we all know how that turned out.

Besides, even Yoshi himself said that SE has had the "graphics disease" for too long (in other words, obsessed with producing beautiful looking games... at the expense of everything else, like story, characters, gameplay... you know, what an actual game consists of.), which is the thinking that doomed FFXIV 1.0 before it was even launched. And because ARR's whole purpose was to fix the problems with 1.0, graphics are hence the trade-off for focusing on gameplay and story, it's one of those "can't have your cake and eat it too" deals.

And as Yoshi is also a big fan of the older style FF games (he's on record as saying his favourites are FFIII and VII), I don't think you will see any major change in the graphic engine any time soon... if at all.
