I've never noticed that about Hilda. Interesting. While this would make sense, sadly the game has made a hash of this particular theory with the introduction of Hilda, the Mongrel. Her mother was Hyur, and Hilda has distinctly pointed Elezen ears. As others have pointed out, she is this game's obligatory half-elf, much like Lilisette was in FFXI. And, also like Lilisette, she's the only half-breed visible in the whole game, when logically (given all the mixed-race romances we see among NPCs) they should be all over the place.

So you're saying that one of the most popular reasons for mixed race pairings is specifically to avoid child-rearing (actually, I can see that happening)? In that case, I need a reminder, do people in Eorzea have a problem with Mixed Marrages, and would the inability to breed be the reason?
Its basically part my theory why catgirls are such popular "dancers" (I really don't think they can have viable offspring with the other Spoken races due to their unique physiology. Same for Au Ra, maybe for Lala too), the other being with so few males for them, they choose that profession for their own "amusement"...
Hard to say since every region has its own preferences and all (Gridania and Limsa seem to be more lenient, whereas Ishgard is not. Not sure about Ul'dah, and each hamlet is different as well), but could be a reason. Would also partially explain why the Wanderer's Palace pair was chased off by their people (though, not fully since they were hated for the interracial aspect of their relationship, not because they were both male. Still can be a part, if the people are more accepting of homosexual relationships but not interracial).
Wouldn't be surprised if the general consensus was for casual relationships, anything goes (within the 5/6 races anyway), but for anything more serious, pair with your own race (adventurers being an exception, cause who really wants to tell them no?)

I suppose that would also explain the popularity of mixed race couplings among adventurers. If there is less of a chance of conceiving a child, then such a pairing would have less chance of being forced into early retirement due to pregnancy and child rearing responsibilities.
I suppose.

Cultural differences aside, some of the pairings would present certain...logistical problems. I can't imagine my character being able to be intimate with someone that they aren't even knee high to.

If there's a will there's a way:

It certainly seems to produce the most interesting accents. The English voice actor for Hilda, man - completely unique and shivers my knickers every time![]()
