well there were many wipes and vote abandons when people tried to beat ultros in duty finder so you did repeat the same quest.
I personally miss the days of taking a year to get to cap.
And there being content along the way that was challenging and fun but because it took so long to get to cap once you got to cap. You where so happy.
I think it's the fact that he kills gear off so fast and that this game is EXTREMELY vertical.
I think he should add more options and dial it back a bit with the gear/content killing. He (along with this community) also needs to stop being so freaking scared of adding new/different content. This is THEE scariest community I've ever seen, people suggest awesome ideas to remedy this issue and the community just shoots it down with ridiculous "what ifs".
I miss these days as well and I think this is a huge part of what's killing MMOs. MMOs have turned into only a gear grind when they used to be about the journey and making friends, etc. Now it's just get to max cap in 3-5 days and farm a raid over and over.

Yeah I agree with OP. This game is way too vertical. I don't want pure horizontal either...ick. Ideally 1.23 patch was best..it was an amazing mix between horizontal and vertical ^^
I also am not too fond of the same predictable patches, we need more open world content, more FC content, etc etc. Mix it up SE, you guys are awesome..I know you can do it!

I do enjoy this game still I also hoping SE mix it up some the game is extememly vertical IMO for the moment. They do need some horizontal very slightly at first though to be introduced, a new type of materia that boost traits or change a way a spell or ability works be nice also were it not total focus on stats only.

Problem with that timeframe in THIS game at least is the fact you can and are encouraged to level every/multiple jobs on one character. That would be absolutely TERRIBLE in this game if it took a year to cap per job
Not if we hadn't removed physical level... But alas, having not only every job on one character, but shared progression and interaction between was a terrible idea, right? It might actually encourage playing multiple jobs rather strongly at that point... The horror. The horror.

I really don't get why people expect an entirely new game with entirely new mechanics every expansion... "it's just more of the same" makes no sense to me - of course it is, it's the same game! People continuously complain about the tomestone mechanic which has been in place since the launch of the game still being used, as if they shouldn't be. But, it's a core mechanic that has been there since launch - why would it change? The game is still the game it was at release, and will always be the same game. It isn't going to become an action RPG, or a tactical combat sim, or a dating sim. It's a very specific version of the MMO genre, and it always has been, and it always will be.
I'm not saying, if you don't like the game then quit. I'm saying, if you don't like the game, why are you expecting it to change into a game you do like in some future patch? I honestly do not understand why people play a game that has core mechanics that they don't like, hoping for those core mechanics to change. The details and minutiae change, but the core of the game never will, and I feel it never should. I can understand debating the implementation of specific details and features, but not the core ones, like vertical progression that jumps on a set schedule (every six months) and gear tokens.

For me, it's one of those "well there is nothing better" situations. Waiting on WoW Legion, Bless, Pantheon and Project Gorgon - hopefully one of those is more my cup of tea.I'm not saying, if you don't like the game then quit. I have been playing FFXIV since it was released in 2010. That's 6 years. What do I have to show for it?
1. A tattoo.
2. A 'Legacy Chocobo'
3. A now completely worthless 'Relic'
4. Most of my jobs at lvl 60
5. ALL of my gear worthless, over, and over, and over again.
6. Some achievements from 1.0
7. A Medium house I bought in 2013 upon ARR.
^ How is this to inspire me to keep going? 6 years deep into this game, and players who started 2 months ago could catch up to me.
Where is the longevity? Where is a long term achievable goal? Why are long term goals (relics) nerfed to where the grind I did for it is now quite literally, worthless? With every patch im asking myself, "I may as well not even bother, it will all be worthless again."
This is an opinion from someone who has played, and loved, this game for half a decade. Give me something to show that. I really don't care if you disagree with me either, i can almost guarantee anyone who responds to this negatively has not put in as much time to this game as I have unless they also started from the very beginning of 1.0.
