can anyone tell me if it is possible to use a keyboard for chat purposes only and the controller for gameplay with the ps4?

also, is there any recommendations for keyboards to get either way??

Yes you can use a keyboard for just chat while using a controller for everything else

If you're just getting it for chat, literally any super cheap keyboard will work

There's actually a configurable setting for this part, called "Direct Chat" in the Character Configuration window. It's turned on by default on PS3 and PS4 (I'm guessing available but off by default on PC).

When the feature is on, you can just start typing and it will automatically move focus to the chat box and interpret your keystrokes as text. Only non-text keys (function keys, and extras like print screen, etc.) are interpreted as triggering other actions according to keybind settings. (This means you have very few keybinds, but it's suitable if you're using a controller for everything except chat anyway.)

With the feature turned off, it will interpret keyboard keystrokes according to the keybind settings for triggering actions. When you instead want to type to the chat box, you need to manually move focus there before you start typing.

All you need is a USB keyboard plug it in on second slot and it should work just find I usually play on PC but I use my ps4 for when I gather and craft all I do is unplug my keyboard from PC into my ps4 and it works.

I can recommend this one. It's certainly not perfect, but I prefer it over a keyboard on my lap.

I play with Xbox controller on my computer so it's pretty much the same thing except I'm at a desk. Maximum comfy.
