do people hate tanking?

I also want to clear up a huge misconception about the role that people believe and ends up driving them away.

Tanks are NOT the leader of the party. Parties do not have leaders unless one is designated by the group. A leader is the one making decisions based on composition and reactionary elements...things you really don't find, or don't matter, in 4-man instances. If a leader IS needed, the person with the most knowledge of the fight is picked, regardless of role.

What a tank is is the HEAD of the party, which is wholly different. The head of the party is the person on the frontline...the one who goes in first. The tank certainly can be the leader, but the healer or one of the DPS could just as well be the leader. What a healer and DPS isn't though is at the head of the party.


Once people stop confusing the two and giving people the wrong idea, it will help to alleviate some of the unneeded stress people think exists for the role.

If all you do is sit back and let them do what they want, that is essentially letting them walk all over you.

I'm more than happy to do my role for a good group that does their roles. However, when they step out of their roles, they're making it clear that they don't care who does what role anymore. And as such, you can feel free to join in and do whatever you want too.

If DPS keep pulling purposely, I will simply switch to DPS stance and focus on DPSing while they tank.

They should learn to treat the people they can't easily replace better. They should treat everyone well, but it's downright self destructive to bully someone who likely won't be replaced if they're gone and someone who is most likely needed to complete the dungeon at that.

That's another mindset tanks should avoid. A feeling of superiority. But yes, actions detrimental to the group are bad. The tank refusing to tank only makes matters worse. Put forth the effort and try to grab what's pulled. If you fail it's not because you gave up or decided to teach them a lesson, its because of a genuine problem caused by the one actively sabotaging the group and should be recognized as such.

No, it means the tank queued for tank, they queued for DPS, but they want to tank. All bets are off when they start invading the tank's role.

But it wouldn't matter in my case usually anyways. If someone is obviously pulling on purpose and isn't in a premade, I'll initiate a votekick, and usually it goes through.

If they are in a premade or the kick fails, I'll go afk and let them kick me and get insta-queued right back into a better group while they get to go to the back of the queue line or wait forever on a replacement. Either thing works for me. I refuse to give trolls a free pass, and I have plenty of other things I can do to pass the time needed for them to decide to kick me.

I think tanking is fun, the reason why i dont queue as a tank much because of being criticized too much for not pulling enough. I usually take it easy at first to see what the healer can handle first but trigger happy dps sometimes cant wait that long lol

I can agree to this, but other ppl need to keep in mind if a person is new, or the other to dps are melee. I was in DF que with 2 ninjas 1 was new and the healer asked to pull more, I explained I would if I had a brd and blm combo and 1 wasn't new

You sound like a horrible tank, please stop queuing as such. I can give you many other methods to make gil without crafting.

Healer: oh that BLM ate an AoE? I could heal him, but instead, I'll let him cure himself. That'll teach him.
DPS: Oh this WAR wants to stance dance does he? Well I'll just idle afk while he solos this DPS check.

I mean, why would you play at a detriment to your group out of annoyance at another party member. It's petty, unhelpful and just bad play.

Do you see the words "on purpose" in my post? I really hope not, because if you do and you still posted that nonsense....well, I'll just refrain from finishing that sentence. If a DPS runs ahead and pulls half the dungeon several times, it's obvious they're trolling or being idiots.

But no, I'm actually a great tank even though I don't really like tanking. I've just endured lots of trolling in DF and have gotten tired of reacting to it with futile pacifism. You can't do much with people whose intent is to make your run hell except to refuse to allow them to make your run hell.

Way to go though, asking someone who contributes to alleviating the tank shortage, shortening queues, contributing to smooth runs to stop doing so just because I refuse to let trolls troll me. Very productive of you.

I enjoy playing a tank but I don't like the expectation that I should know the instance inside and out before even stepping into the dungeon. It's like people expect me to be the leader but at the same time they don't like tanks who act like leaders.

I just want to go in, grab the aggro, manage my damage mitigation, and watch for the bad stuff. If there are new boss mechanics, I want to learn them the same way I learn them on my damage dealers and healers. By experiencing it first hand!

Furthermore, there is a large number of dps players who won't allow me to pull first. It's crazy the number of times I've had to jump in and pick up mobs like a madman because some other player decided they should be the puller.

Now, I appreciate a good challenge, but damn, I should be worked with, not against. I don't like fighting mobs and my own party to get through an instance. It's supposed to be a team effort where folks work together to overcome the challenges but there are just too many hyper or arrogant damage dealers in the duty finder to let this happen. That's what kills my desire to tank.

I saw on purpose, and I think that because someone is purposefully being annoying is a horrible excuse for you to purposefully lower your skill level.

I'd rather wait an extra couple of minutes than get a tank who refuses to pick up adds on the DPS.
