To me, the biggest problem in this story is that the tank feels if he doesn't pull more than he's comfortable pulling he will get kicked out of the group.

Correct.. I've been kicked quite a few times for not pulling big enough mobs back when I used to tank.. part of the reason I don;t do it anymore

I'm confused, why would it be the tank that's uncomfortable with big pulls? If the group asks you to pull more and then they can't kill them/keep you alive, that's not on you, assuming you're in tank stance and using cooldowns.
