The general cancerous mentality is this for most people, especially on DF...As a tank you must perform with 100% efficiency all the time. If you make one little mistake you are immediately a shit tank who should play another class/job and the whole wrath of the human race will descend upon you. When it's someone elses mistake in the party, it's still your fault and bad dps and healer use this cancerous mentality to hide their own failings. If you defend yourself in those instances then the majority of the time you are laughed at and eventually vote kicked.

    Or, food for thought.

    Maybe it's actually your fault.

    +1

If I get cocky and pull an entire area and miss a CD or something, and I cause a wipe, then I lol it off and apologize. I generally still get a Comm or two. At the same time, I don't START the run off pulling the entire area. I pull maybe two groups to see if we can handle it, then I increase it based on the kill rate.

I think you should respect the healers more than anything. They're the ones having to actually fix everyone's stupid. Tanking is a drop in the ocean of Healer woes.

There's plenty of threads detailing healer woes over in the healer forums, though...

It's a bad idea to go into a support class thinking that its your job to fix other people's mistakes. One, you can't. Two, it's frustrating for you, because you'll take every mistake that happens as something that you personally have to deal with, instead of letting each person deal with it on their own. Third, it's frustrating for everyone else, because "fixing" other people's mistakes is the fastest way to start thinking that you're better than everyone else.

This is a particularly easy trap to fall into if you're playing a role which requires a lot of situational awareness but where your own mistakes generally aren't as blatantly visible/obvious to the raid as a whole. Healers who can take everything in stride are seriously worth their weight in gil.

Tanking, healing, and to an extent, ranged support classes, are about facilitating and enhancing other players' performances. It's a different mindset from a pure dps. You're not trying to be the best. You're trying to bring out the best.

Trying like mad to break into tanking myself, wanted to for YEARS. Yes its a pain; you're under scrutiny all the time and never get the credit bad DDs do, I consider some tanks to actually be masochistic, but respected none-the-less. Props to those who can deal with the crap with a smile though.

I main heals, always have, I never understood healers who go off on tangents about how bad players can be, to me its probably the easiest class (may just be the experience talking, hell I dunno).

Good players are good, bads are bad, get over it and enjoy the game I say.

Took a break since 2.5, appearently I didn't miss much hahah.

I'm totally one of those masochistic tanks you mentioned. Record damage for sephirot ex was 300k when I took both but stomps after the party had already wiped :3 on topic though I main drk and absolutely love it, and it's fun to try the other tow to see the different playstyles.
