I had a question about gardening in the game if you dont use grade 3 thanalan topsoil and use grade 3 shroud topsoil can you still get seeds from it if the planted things are the same seeds? say like if i use all glazenuts and use grade 3 shroud topsoil will i get seeds from them still or must you use thanalan soil to be able to get seeds back?

Yes you will, Thanalan Soil only increases the likelihood of it happening. That being said however, it is extremely noticeable when you switch soils.

Any soil can give seeds, however Thanalan soil increases the chances of getting seeds. Grade 3 Thanalan soil is a near guarantee.
Shroud 3 soil gives increased yield, this is true for seeds as well. So the chance of getting seeds is lower, but if you get seeds you will get more.

BUT Shroud soil does not work on all plants. Certain plants will always yield 1 crop and 1 seed max no matter what soil you use. Unless this changed with a recent patch, glazenuts are among those that yield only 1 crop. So using Shroud soil would be a waste, as you have less chance for seeds and no increased yield. (At least this is how it was. If this has changed in recent patches, someone please chime in).

If the harvested crops are your main focus and seeds are a nice bonus, use Shroud soil.
If you need the seeds the more than the crops, use Thanalan soil.
Just remember than Shroud soil does not work on certain plants.

I'd like to ask a question regarding gardening too since there's a current thread!

I try to grow Jute to craft some stuff. Now when I plant Jute seeds next to Jute seeds I don't get more Jute seeds at all just Jute itself although I'm using Grade 3 Thanalan Topsoil. I also tried Grade 3 Shroud Topsoil but it didn't increase the yield either.

You spoke about some seeds yield just 1 no matter what. Is it because of that? Though why no seeds then? Do they not "crossbreed"? I'm pretty new to gardening and haven't found the right track yet I think. Is there somewhere I can look up those things you (Alice) spoke about?

The problem is intercrossing doesn't really work like that. When you plant a seed next to a specific different seed there is a chance (and the chance is increased to 90% I think using thanalan topsoil) that together with the normal yeild (and yes, for some plants it's going to be only 1 regardless) you can find a new, "mutated" seed.

To make a practical example, if you plant an Old World Fig next to a Prickly Pineapple, when you gather the mature Fig you have a chance of receiving a Glazenut seed too.
To get more jute you should plant a Mandrake seed next to it.

you dont plant jute beside jute. crossbreeding and recycling seeds requires that u plant a different kind of seed beside the jute.
in this case it would b jute + mandrake being most common seed. chance get pearl roselle seed instead of jute with that combination.

Since we're at it, a quick question about rare seeds : is it required to use grade III soil to get one blood pepper / glazenut per seed ?
Or I can use grade I without risking having 0 to gather ?

No, you can use any soil. We use the grade 3 thanalan one because since the seed is so difficult to obtain it's a good practice to intercross it at the same time to make it easier for yourself to get more seeds, but it's by no means required.
