Maybe I'm not understanding this correctly... If I'm in a dungeon and I'm a healer and a piece of gear drops with mind + piety on it and it's clearly for CNJ (cuz it says so of course), and it's definitely an upgrade for me, I'll hit need. Anyone who's NOT a CNJ should have their "need" button greyed out and unclickable.

Same scenario, except I'm a lancer, and there's another DoW in the group, and the piece of gear has stats for DPS and it's definitely an upgrade for both of us, and we both hit need, while everyone else has the button grey'd out cuz the gear's class restrictions doesn't let them roll on it. The game does the /random for both of us behind the scenes and gives it to whoever wins.

    Am I missing something?

What happens if, because of party makeup, you're playing a class that you definitely don't see yourself playing very often and that you don't care for as much?

I'll be sure to change my weapon appropriately so I can lot on everything. That will be so much better than random drops.

Simple solution, record the class a person was before the drop, like during the encounter so after the drop it won't happen.

lets see, there are Tank roles, DPS roles and healing roles. If you really like to dps and the group needs a tank or a healer but you hate both, find a healer or a tank instead of another DPS. If you filled the group and are still in this situation then you didn't look at your team comp very carefully when inviting players. As a last resort just have each player seeking the DPS item do a /random (which they should add ) and give it to the highest score.

    I see your point.
Doesn't the game lock you into your class/job once you are in active mode (no class/job switching mid-fight), until the end of the battle (rather, once you're in passive mode)? How about.... the game locks you into active mode (so you can't go into passive and thus switch classes/jobs) once an encounter begins? After the fight, you can switch freely, but the game only allows you to roll on a piece of gear that pertains to the class/job you were locked into during that particular fight.

Yes, here is what your missing.

I say I am a main healer, its what i prefere to play, I consider it my main class. I happen to have 50 MRD also. No one else has a tank class and we can't find someone to tank. SO, I tank, even though I prefere not to, as a matter od neccessity.

By your standards here, I, by changing classes as a manner of assisting the group, I am now not permitted to advance my main class with gear upgrades. The other option is that we can't do the raid because we have no tank. In either case, I would get no gear toward my main.

Yes, you are missing something. Although you may come from an MMO like WoW where characters specialize in only one job or class, Final Fantasy XIV is not structured that way. People tend to have multiple jobs levelled and specialized, so the restriction of graying out gear for a job or class that they are not currently using is not applicable.

There should be a /random option. It would help determine who gets loot if multiple people want the same item. It would also help determine who uses their anima for teleportation and other needs where players would like the option of an in-game random number generator that could not be manipulated.

Treasure in a party should go into a pool, not just drop into random party members' treasure pool.

It is quite dysfuntional in it's current form.

Having to be near someone in order to transfer loot to them is also a restriction that becomes a burden and is more annoying than useful. Especially in a battle situation or timed instance where players cannot afford the time to delay combat in order to transfer loot to another party member.

The Master Looter idea also fails because it can be easily manipulated and take advantage of other party members. Maybe some people are lucky enough to play with the same friends al of the time, but in Final Fantasy MMO you are typically in groups with random people.

There should be some in-game mechanism where players could cast lots to see if they could randomly aquire gear or choose not to lot if they didnt need or want the item.

There was a Quartermaster option in FFXI parties. No one used it or joined parties where the leader had that option set because they would keep all of the drops for themselves.

Please add party alliances so we can link parties.
