It doesn't seem to be removing sleep. Noticed this when changing to scholar that purify just goes on cool down while you remain asleep. It didn't seem to do this before (as in, it removed sleep when used).

You are probably targeting another friendly target since you're playing a Scholar. You can use Purify on other players and it's probably using it on them.

This has been happening to me for a long time, albeit rarely, and I highly doubt that I was unwittingly targeting an ally every time since it has never happened with any enfeeblement other than Sleep.
I can confirm, especially since seeing a lot more BLKs in pvp lately, that purify does remove sleep everytime I use it on myself or others.
use a macro if you wanna be sure to cast it on yourself:
/macroicon "Purify"
/action "Purify" <me>
