    New to FFXIV crafting

So im new to the crafting game in FFXIV. Ive leveled Miner to 18 Fishing to 21 and Botanist to maybe 5. Have a couple DoH classes to an all time high of 8. The system is terrifying and incredibly daunting to me and it keeps me from diving in. So i was hoping reaching out to the forums I could get some insight.

Obviously crafting is a good way to make money, but from what i read you need to spend a lot of money (which i do not have) to level it. With the DoL jobs, do any of them make money at 60? Do you have to gear each job as though it was a battle class?

Right now fishing is whats keeping the majority of my attention, but im worried its a loss cause. Exclusively, can a fisher make decent money? What role does it play in regards to the DoH jobs? My biggest worry is sinking time into these jobs and then it not really be worth it in the long run.

I hate to use this example, but I play WoW and WoD killed crafting. There is no real reason for people to really craft because your garrison can do it all. Do DoH have any real impact on the DoW/DoM jobs as far as gear? Is it viable? I know they have talked about making it so crafted gear actually has a decent role and can be a good option as a stepping stone for gear just not sure if it was implemented or if thats coming in the future.

Sorry for the longish post and I thank anyone who answers as I do want to get into crafting just have my worries.

Crafting and gathering have the following advantages:

You can repair your own gear at 150% efficiency, rather than paying a mender to get back to 100%

You can perform your own melding on gear

If you learn gathering skills, you can pretty much provide for your own crafting materials (at least through level 50). You can sell materials you don't personally use. Sale of level 50-60 crafting materials can also be lucrative. Over a year's time, I have personally made (and spent) well over 10 million gil selling NQ/HQ materials with minimal effort.

Crafting helps you provide an advantage for your secondary jobs, as you can craft your own gear rather than waiting for it to show up as a quest reward. You can craft the gear for your retainers as well. And, after you hit the mid-50s, you can almost guarantee HQ results using NQ materials for all 2.x recipes that aren't on the two-star-plus list. Useful for helping out those up-and-coming members of your Free Company.

The way to maximize gil fishing is by leveling CUL desynthsis. And it will not really pay off until higher levels. All the DoL jobs can use the same gear save tools of course. Level them in parallel to take advantage of this.

A number of fish are used by DoHs but most aren't. From the lowly Coral Butterfly to the Emperor fish there are uses for many.

Miner can make decent gil starting at L 20. As for L 60? Oh my yes. You just need to know what to gather. Alumen, Silver Ore, Effervescent Water. For BOT, right now Lavender, Garlic Cloves, Elm logs, Chamomile seeds, Midland Cabbage seeds, Mandrake seeds.

As to DoH earnings, I am all 60s crafting but rarely craft since ARR. This is strictly preference. Many buy crafted armor and accessories, as do I, so there is gil in it.

Plus as culinarian you can craft raid food that really pricy
And if you can gather your own comp it's more gils saved

Same for ALC but potion are costy to do.

    About self-repair
It more than 150% per repair and it cost 10time less than the PNJ

And yeah since 3.2 DoW and DoM are appreciated and bought
I made like 10M in les than 24h just with my GSM doing rings

Yes, it is viable. There are other things, as well, that make them worth it (beside it being a fun mini-game. ^^) You'll make a ton of gil off farming. It seems like you wouldn't necessarily, because everyone seemingly has access to the same nodes. There's no fighting over them. It would seem similar to garrisons in WoW in that way but they aren't available to everyone. I thought that too, after coming from WoW. I make money just fine.

This is mainly because FFXIV allows you to only gather so much each week. You get the cap so you can never really flood the market. (You get 9 red scrips for DoH and 9 for DoL. It takes 2 DoL and 1 DoH red script to get 15 of a certain material, which recipes generally call for 5 to make the leather/cloth/etc. The starred recipes then generally call for 3 to 5 of leather/cloth/etc. to make. You see where that leads, I'm sure.) Other high level mats are only available for a couple minutes an hour or so, and they all tend to be one of two periods, which also gates them -- though much more loosely than the weekly caps. Then you have the dusts, which are also on a timed schedule but are much more RNG. You get what I'm saying. xD

The real money sink is if you don't level up DoL classes with your DoH classes... as I did. xD The two are very tied together, especially at end game.

I have all crafts at 50 but barley craft to make my Gil. Get gathers to 60 well at least one and gear it. Gather a lot, you will get Gil. Also watch the market see what's selling in demand.

Don't forget that once you've got your DoL to 50-60, you can get your retainers to do the same and you can send them off to get more materials for you.

Get all craftes to 15 to start with so you can get the tier 1 cross class skills and work your way up.

And last but not least don't ever ever under-cut the market your stuff will eventually sell so why take the loss. I usually aim for the center of the price listing it may take longer to sell but it will sell for huge profits.
