Question Now that Playstation VR has a price Could we consider

Today Sony put a price tag and a date on Playstation VR.

Now that's it out there. Is there anyway way we could get square to reconsider adding the VR that they made for the TGS into the game? The idead of being able to enjoy the art of the world from a VR standpoint is extremely appealing to me. Sitting next to friends watching fireworks at events, watching the snow fall at Camp Dragon Head, or the sun set at Camp Cloudtop in vr would be insane. I know its extremely silly but it would be something that i would enjoy immensely. but I guess its no sillier then /icam really and that's real..

Obviously im not thinking about actually doing fights with it cause yea first person and all but.. yea. It would definitely be a massive selling point for the Playstation VR for me and I just thought maybe if I'm not alone maybe SE would consider it if they knew people wanted it.

So was the PS move controls but they added support for that after pretty much everyone gave it up

When every tech giant on the planet is invested in it I think it's safe to say it's not a fad. This isn't just a gimmick, it completely changes the way you experience games. I've used both the Occulus and the Vive and the experience is like nothing else I can describe. The hardware might be pricey now but that will change. It really isn't a fad.

With that said they likely won't develop a VR version for FFXIV. You have to bear in mind that VR requires the game be rendered twice. With a beefy PC that's fine but the consoles simply won't be able to handle it for a game that wasn't built with VR in mind.

3D TV that was the last big thing and how did that work out. VR like 3D just isn't practicable for everyday use. look at how popular the motion tech in the Wii was and Microsoft even introduced their Kinect stuff. Do 'next gen' consoles all have motion control now. Well Microsoft tried and failed; Kinect never took off and is mostly used in academia now. Most gamers want to sit on their fat arse and play games.

3D TV was a gimmick. It just gave a different way to do what you already did (watch TV/movies) and there's very little in the way of actual 3D TV broadcasting to make a 3D TV worth it. 3D cinema and movies have been extremely successful because they're on a totally different scale but most people won't buy a 3D TV just to watch movies in 3D that are also available in 2D.

VR is different. It's not just playing games in 3D. VR games are built from the ground up for VR. The entire experience is new nd you interact with them entirely differently. You seem to be seeing VR as a new iteration of gaming peripheral when it's actually more on par with being the next big tech jump since TV. VR revolutionizes the entire way media of all forms can be delivered; applications are extensive well beyond gaming.

I'm going to assume you've not actually tried Occulus or Vive? Most of the VR naysayers are skeptics who haven't actually tried it yet... It's also entirely possible to play VR whilst sitting down, not every game requires you to physicially walk around; the fact you use that argument makes me fairly certain you haven't tried it yet.

Well, as far as that goes, it remains to be seen whether there is going to be enough VR games to make VR gaming worth it. I do think it has the potential to take off and become a major thing, but kicking it off has a major hurdle. Not that many people will get and use the system until there's a wide array of content for it, and not many developers will invest the money to make top games which would be limited to a VR while VR itself has a small audience.

For a really good VR game, you want it to be built around VR from the outset, designed specifically for that environment. But that's going to limit its audience as those games wouldn't be as well suited to a traditional screen, so would tend to only get VR users. I think that at least at the outset, we're more likely to get a few minor little proof of concept "games" that are truly built for VR, but don't have much in the way of content, plus a few full scale games that are really built to be watched on a TV or computer monitor, but get a VR adaptation despite not really being designed for it. (FFXIV in VR, for instance, would fall into the later category if it happens.)

Neither of those types are going to be the ideal VR game, but in order for it to take off and become something more than a fad, those less than ideal versions have to still interest enough people to get the system, so it starts looking like a big enough audience for developers to devote the funds to investing in for major games designed towards the system. I really hope that happens, but it remains to be seen yet whether it will or not.

You inadvertently hit the nail on the head. They'd have to be built from the ground up for VR. That would mean that there would have to be a significant user base to justify making the game for VR, or VR only and with the current price whch will likely drop but those system requirements are very steep for PC games in general. It might seem like every one has a pair of SLI Titans with i7 overclocked to the heavens but i suspect they dont. Look at how hard it is to get games that run well on PCs instead of a console port.

The games industry itself is very conservative and that's why we really see any new innovate games instead of the annual Call of Duty.

No, I've not tried VR nor did I try 3D TV but I'm sure they are both amazing experiences but would I slap on my VR headset and log in and play FF14 for 30 mins every day. That's a lot of effort and not really needed.

I think that VR should be like 3D movies where you go to a place to experience it rather than an every day technology.

So I thought with 3D movies at theaters, but it's been quite a few years now.

Agreed. People get seasick, but cruise ships are still in business.

Cruises are a luxury, same with VR.
