Hmm.. .No. it's actually because Yoshi-P wants all jobs to have access to the same number of skills. Giving SMN, for instance, 7-8 primals to choose from would give them more utility than the jobs that don't have access to primals. So blue Mage would have to be implimented in a way similar to SMN or SCH as well. Like, you level up, do job quests, and gain access to a specific monster-type and a set of 4ish skills to go with it. If BLU was allowed to use any, most, or even several, monsters' abilities and customize which skills they used on top of it all, they would have to be seriously nerfed skill/damage-wise. This would make them less useful than the jobs with less utility.

In XI blue mage was an intensely wonderful job (I'm bias, yes) if you could deal with the spell hunting. It had a fair variety of gear, it was highly customizable due by spell combination and it didn't have just 1 or 2 subjobs and that's it. Even jobs not normally subbed, such as thf, worked well in exp pts with blue.

The downside is it had a high learning curve. You had to know your spell combos and had to be able to keep yourself open to the possibilities that various gear or spell combinations and various subjobs could bring to gameplay. It was not just a grab a sword and cast this spell type of job, and if you limited yourself to one or two spell sets or subjobs you did not play the job to its full potential.

The way XIV functions there is no way it could bring the glory to blu that XI did. Yoshi simply won't let it and the loud, vocal playerbase would go into a ear shattering uproar if learning spells was outside of facerolling job quests. So while part of me looks forward to blu and rdm both, esp as a fan not only of the jobs themselves but battle mages in general, a majority of me is petrified at how exactly they will be both implemented and played in this game. My assumption is that they will be blu and rdm in name only

Reinventing old jobs within the context of a different game is not "butchering" them, quite the opposite. I don't understand comments like this. If you want to play classic FF jobs in exactly the way the worked in the FF they where first introduced in, then please go play that FF game and don't complain about newer entries in the series taking those jobs into new directions. It's been done before, and it's gonna be done again.

The only way I see Blue mage coming to FFXIV is if it isn't a normal battle class. Something more like our chocobos... they can fight just not in anything important. Also with that extreme limitation to it we could get blue mage like in FFXI or other FF games and it could be fun. After seeing how AST works I can also see BLU getting mixed with BST to give us a bit of both and allowing for a job that fits in FFXIV but then I still don't know what attacks we would even be able to get.

There is another issue most people ignore. Animations. In my opinion one of the only cool parts of blu in the past is the animations the monsters get but in FFXIV I couldn't name any monster that does anything cool that I would want to be able to do other than a few special bosses.

I agree with this. IN FFXI Dancer is nothing like my favorite character and dancer Mog but that didn't stop Dancer from being an awesome job. Most of the job/classes in Final Fantasy games don't have a set list of things they have to do/be... its more of a running theme. Black mage and white mage are probably the two that have the least change from one game to the next.

It's still very possible for FFXIV's Blue Mage to learn skills the old-fashioned way, you know.

I don't think these classic FF jobs in FFXIV are butchered at all. Pray tell how they are butchered?
Most of them became actually more interesting than whatever FF game's counterpart had to offer. Some weren't possible with the kind of combat we have but worked out so well.

Because some people think different is synonymous with butchered

I see no problem with Blue Mage learning skills through class story quests where the Blue mage is tasked to going to a place and observer the monsters there to learn a new skill. In the end, the important part is how the class plays, not how it gets there. Flavor can be achieved in many ways.
