    The Calamity

I never fully understood why the Calamity happened in the first place and why Bahamut wanted to destroy/destroyed the world of Eorzea. Is there documentation in the Lore either in game or in books that can explain this to me. I know from a non Lore perspective its because the new development team wanted to make a fresh new start for everyone and distance themselves from 1.0. Was it really necessary however to have a complete destruction of the world, I am deeply saddened at times that I can no longer go back and play story lines in 1.0 to me this was a big tragedy in gaming history albeit perhaps an important one.

Have you beaten Heavensward? The Binding Coil of Bahamut raid has some info as does Tiamat at Azys La. I can try and break it down in a bit but those spots 100% have info.

EDIT: Oop nvm other folks got it covered!

Tiamat explains most of that in the HW MSQ.

Basically Bahamut was killed because of Allagan shenanigans. The Ascians then played both sides, tricking Tiamat into reviving Bahamut as a primal while also teaching the Allagans how to trap and control primals. Primal Bahamut is pure rage and destruction because that's what Tiamat wanted when summoning him.

Along with I think anyone would be pissed if they were locked up in a prison for 5,000 years. That and more Ascian meddling/guiding in bringing Dalamud down to earth until it got close enough to create a thrall out of "Nael" as by that time it wasn't the Nael.

I believe that in addition to Bahamut being summoned angry in the first place from Tiamat's grief, he also had to hear the screams of the dragons imprisoned alongside him in Dalamud for thousands of years. By the time he broke out he was pretty much insane.

Primal Bahamut is more then likely crazy by the time he is out of Dalamud. The buff that powers up Bahamut at the end of UCoB is called "Lohs Daih". It literally translates to "Loneliness/Madness Inside" in draconic.

So yeah... Bahamut was probably crazy by the time he went and caused an Umbral Calamity. I would not like to know what he was capable of when he wasn't crazy and just angry at the Allagans...

For what it's worth, sentient aether under containment always behaves like that. There was a scene in 1.0 that showed that even if you trap a Twelveswood elemental in a jar for a few days, it's going to explode out blindly attacking anything nearby. The fact that Bahamut was summoned by a society whose state of mind was dominated by rage, vengeance, sorrow and hatred for the world of man made it that much worse.

Thanks Everyone for the info on the Calamity and Bahamut, I had also wondered how bahamut was so strong that he was able to wipe out the whole world, but your reply explains it well.

Note that Bahamut's rampage was fairly localized, to only most of Eorzea; both Dravania and Gyr Abania were furthest from ground zero in Carteneau, and they seem relatively untouched compared to the regions featured in ARR. Bahamut was supremely powerful for a primal, but was not immediately world-ending in and of himself (though if he had gone on rampage unchecked for weeks or days or even hours more, the difference would be academic).

Well... the 7th Umbral Calamity was ended early by the intervention of Louisouix and Phoenix. If Bahamut wasn't stopped, the 7th Umbral Calamtiy would probably been way, way, way bigger then it was. Probably as big as Eorzea, maybe even larger.
