I've only read the first post and the one on page 11 so I might be repeating what was already said but about the server down, it doesn't mean they don't have backup.

First of all let's disregard the data backup and just talk about server backup. Those can come in many form.

- It can be the use of multiple pieces in the same server so that if a part of the server break, it can still be use while the broken part is switch.

-It can be unused backup server in the same server room that are there to take over when a server have a problem.

-Can be the use of multiple server room in different building so that even in case of fire or something similar to that the server can still be running.

There are other possibility but those are the main ones.

In the current case, the server shut down is due to the electric power company asking for it's customers to reduce their usage of power. Even if SE have backup server, without electricity those can't be use. They might have a generator but those are mad for blackout, not for 24/7 usage.

What the shutdown mean is that they don't have backup servers outside of the area that get it's electricity from TEPCO and there's nothing wrong with that. A situation where an electric company can't assure it's service for an entire area for a prolongate and unknown time is quite rare. A server backup in another area would need maintenance and employees to maintain it. Unlike backup in the same room or a close by building, it's a lot less cost-efficient. Sure it suck that the game is going down for a week and yes they'll lose money because of that but in the long run for the frequency at witch event like that occur, not having backup servers outside the TEPCO area wasn't necessary a bad decision.

for the tl;dr, SE probably have backup server, but if they're in the TEPCO area they can't be used so it suck that the game is down but that kind of situation is extremely rare.
