Not me personally, but I know people who don't pay for retainers and have plenty of space (even with crafting and such). It's more a matter of figuring out what you need and ditching the rest. The game is perfectly playable without paying for retainers. That is your mistake, with all due respect.
You need to look at it from a customer standpoint and from that, it is really a bad thing.
Just like selling DLC for 5€ that contains one weapon for <insert free to play game>..
We pay a subscription and it should include sufficient banking space to manage all the stuff you get.
You have a base inventory of 100 spaces, 2 free retainers of 175 spaces each, 12 armory chest with 25 spaces each for each individual part of weapon/armor/accessories. That's a total of 450 inventory space from the start!
I have played quite a few MMO and you usually are happy when you get a bank storage with 100 space. It's hard to find a game that gives you that many space.
Sure, a special armoire for normal armor so that we can store our glamours would be nice. Sure there is a lot of items we want to keep and our inventory gets full way too fast. But what they give us is not small.
Merle, by comparison most other games don't have you farming so ridiculously many tokens at the same time.
Take the relic at its current stage. You farm dailies (4 tokens) to buy other tokens (another 4) which you can also buy with tomestones (not in your inventory) and parts from Alexander (another 4 tokens). If you need armor at the same time from Alexander, that's another ... what is it, 6 different armor tokens?
Inventory fills up a LOT faster from just playing the game than in most other games.
Agreed and it gets worse when you store old one ones as well because never know if you might want in the future... I have one retainer who's pretty much my "Token Retainer" storing all of the Alexander parts you mentioned (Gordian and Midan), but also drops from Behemoth, Odin, Proto Ultima, CoeurlRegina, Beast tribe currencies (7 different!), Sands and Oils of Time, Mark Logs from hunts, Encrypted Tomestones, Unidentified Allagan Tomestones, Mhachi Farthings, Red Scrip Gathering AND crafting tokens, Brass and Steel Sky pirate spoils from Diadem, Rowena's general tokens and the old soldiery tokens, alexandrite, the Doman Urushis tokens, Carboncoat, Carbontwine... phew. Oh and of course the new Unidentified items and Shiva Diamond Dusts and Levi's Mirrors, Fate Atmas for the old relic, the new Anima relic fate crystals...
I'm sure there are many more I don't have that, but it's a pretty crazy amount and it just keeps increasing! Do I really need the Sands of Time? No probably not, I'm only ever going to use it for getting/upgrading an item and glamouring it, but I don't want to throw it away in case later I do need it and I don't have it any more and would have to get more...
As you may have guessed I pay SE for 6 extra retainers. Have done since the day they launched the service, and I really don't recommend it. The more retainers you have, the more reliant you become on their space and you just can't go back.![]()

It is when you consider we are supposed to be able to play every class on a single character.
I'm not subbed to WoW at the moment so I can't check how much storage I have in total, but I do know I've been able to hang onto every piece of gear I like the look of and the most obscure crafting materials I've picked up that might come in handy one day.
Here, I am constantly shuffling items between my bags and trying to make space.
I've decided not to bother with glamour at all because I craft. FC storage is pitiful, so I'm holding airship parts and airship materials, too. I'd like to do the new beast tribe quests but that would mean at least one more token to hang onto and I'm already holding items for the relic weapon.
I'm not saying the game is unplayable, but it has a huge amount of items that have to go into your or your retainers' bags and I'm definitely finding the lack of space is limiting the number of things I can do.
In a subscription game we ought to have all the storage we need, without having to dip into our wallets and paying extra.
The only reason I really am paying for the extra retainer myself is because I was so used to paying $15 a month for other games that paying $12 seemed cheap so $14 isn't a big blow to me. However I still stand by what has been said, we are paying a monthly fee and have such a hard time with space. The last time I had an issue with inventory was on a F2P game.
What they give us is not small, it's just highly inefficient and ineffective. This is due to multiple issues, such as:You have a base inventory of 100 spaces, 2 free retainers of 175 spaces each, 12 armory chest with 25 spaces each for each individual part of weapon/armor/accessories. That's a total of 450 inventory space from the start!

Sure, a special armoire for normal armor so that we can store our glamours would be nice. Sure there is a lot of items we want to keep and our inventory gets full way too fast. But what they give us is not small.
1. Requiring multiple grades for everything glamour prisms, materia, nq/hq etc.
2. You need to carry around every dye with you, rather than just unlocking colours to dye
3. You need to carry around glamour gear with you, instead of just unlocking glamours in a wardrobe
4. You have all jobs on one character
5. Crafters wear crafting specific gear
6. There is a token for everything which is not just put into our wallet (mark logs, clan mark logs, gordian shafts, midan shafts, hive token and 1000000x other tokens)
7. There is no crafters inventory (this is not necessary but worked very well in Guild Wars 2).. er hem, I guess there is but it's just for crystals/shards
A few suggestions to address some of the above:
1. Make Glamours require 1 glamour crystal, rather than having grade 1/2/3/4/5 and clear/cloth/leather/gsm/alch/armor etc just "Glamour Prism". Then for higher level items require more of them - "This item requires 5 glamour prisms" if you really want to separate grades (which I don't feel is necessary).
2. Make Dye's unlockable and once you unlock it, you can dye to your hearts content - no need to carry around dyes.
3. Make Glamours unlockabl, and once you unlock it, you can glamour to your hearts content - no need to carry around old gear for glamour.
4. Increase the number of slots in Armory Chest. It makes gear progression very frustrating. I only have a few 60's and I am constantly running low on space. Can't imagine how it is for those with more 60's and crafting jobs.
5. Move all tokens to a wallet, similar to how we already have gil/tomestones/mgp/wolf marks etc.
6. Add a separate inventory similar to our current one for crystals/shards where all crafting items can be stored.
Keep in mind, we have 450 inventory spaces, but if you have 10 jobs - that's 40 slots each. In other MMO's if you have 10 classes, you have 10 classes x all of their inventory spaces.
TLDR Copy Guild Wars 2. Cannot say it enough.
I'm a legacy subscription and pay for 1 retainer. Is like paying for the normal subscription base.
I love the official forums, they tell you to use the search for thread about what you wanted to talk but when you use it they judge for necro a thread.
