As you know, Japan has been hit with a terrible disaster this week.
We have received and greatly appreciate all the kind words of concern from our fans and players.
As a result of the earthquake, we temporarily may have to shut down the servers hosting FFXI and FFXIV.
We are now analysing the situation and studying very hard what we can do to fulfil our social responsibilities under the unusual circumstances and to mitigate the inconvenience to our players.
According to out best estimate at this point, we will temporarily have to shut down the servers shortly.
We will give you as much advance notice as possible under the rapidly changing circumstances.
If the servers are shut down, we will try to provide updates in the information section of our Official Website.

If the servers can crash as many times as they did and not lose data, I'm fairly sure shutting them down for a while isn't going to do anything to our characters.

I fully support SE's decision to do this given the extreme nature of the situation in Japan.

Least they said something about it. Ithink at most it will be for a mnth-3 mnths tops. I just hope they don't charge ppl for this time in ffxi. This might make them lose a ton of players. But what is more importent is they help out their country.

Damn, i typed that message word for word from FFXI system message i got. Its now a post on the Loadstone if anyone wants to read it again. ^^

Tokyo itself has 13 million people. I think people will be surprised at how quickly the majority go back to work. I even saw one person still trying to type at his computer while it was taking place. They have a strong disaster response team but the issue of exploding nuclear power stations will need them to prioritise energy but im not sure if it will take 3 months.

My heart goes out to all those living in Japan or those who have friends or family in Japan. I fully understand that this is a terrible natural disaster and one the consequences will be a loss of power.

Honestly, I'm not sure how long the power saving would be, I can't even make an estimate, I just hope it doesn't even up being anything over a month at the absolute most. Not just in the frame of FFXIV being down, but for their economy and other vital processes in their country.

Also, I'm glad to see that players are very understanding of their situation and the severity of the event that happened even if it detrimentally effects a game they play on a consistent basis. I've had friends in the States that have actually joked about about the situation in Japan, while I have a hard time understanding how someone could find it funny. Very happy to see that we as players have risen above that kind of ignorance.

You got to take in account all the funnerals and memorial services plus the "in morning" time. We don't know if any of the families of the SE company have been effected.
