I understand having a DPS meter but what is the point of a HPS or even a TPS?

I love the official forums, they tell you to use the search for thread about what you wanted to talk but when you use it they judge for necro a thread.

HPS
Knowing your total Healing output with overhealing
Knowing your actual healing done without overhealing
The percent of healing done versus your other healing partner in one of the 8-man raids.
TPS
Can put numbers to the test to find the best threat output either on a dummy or in a live encounter.
As a tank in other games, if the threat levels were shown in a number format, I would break down the rotation to get the most out of my class. After al,l the more threat I could do then more damage my dpsers could do without using any threat reducing mechanics.

I think the question she asked was supposed to be taken literally.
There really is no point to HPS or TPS to be honest. There are too many variables with HPS and TPS that go beyond what the individual is doing.
Healing really only has 1 metric. Did everyone survive assuming no one ate avoidable damage? It's a yes or no scenario. "But Velox, what about overhealing?" To be honest, while overhealing is bad, it's not going to make or break a fight in 99% of scenarios. As long as a healer has enough MP to get through the fight, and the party was victorious in the end, that extra healing doesn't matter. If a healer runs out of MP due to overhealing, then you just say "looks like you ran out of MP, you need to curb your healing a bit." You don't even need a meter for this.
TPS is in the same boat. In fact, both TPS and HPS are actually OPPOSITE of DPS in terms of performance. DPS you always want to aim for the maximum number possible. HPS and TPS, you only want to aim for the minimum number needed to get you through an instance. Because of this, HPS and TPS meters are plainly stupid.

I played a shaman healer for the better part of ten years in WoW. I went toe to toe against my wife who played a paladin for the same time frame. It was a blast trying to out heal her and do less overhealing. Just because you might not find these numbers and stats of value doesn't mean others share those thoughts.
