Don't rush the thank you just yet. Gotta wait til it's released and see how ppl will "mentor" the community first. That's what im waiting on.

As said above depending how people use the system will depend on how helpful it is.
At the very least when in the mentor system you won't hear " I pay for my game I'll play how I want to."
I don't think it's even been confirmed as much as it was an idea that was just tossed out. There's always the chance that it will end up like the summoner-egi glamours and the increased GC ranks.

All those things are confirmed though... Egi-Glamours just takes a lot of time to produce given they need to animate all the Egi (OK, they might scrap the idea for that alone) and they've said new GC Ranks are coming, but they want significant content to come alongside it, rather than the same dull "Go farm X Seals" quests we previously had. So they need to create the content tied to new Ranks as well, which like Egi animations is going to take time.
Fairly sure the Mentor System is confirmed for 3.2 though, it was mentioned alongside all the other 3.2 content in the recent live letter... Not to keen on it having a Roulette though... They can certainly make it work, but I worry about the reward being such that people just opt in, regardless of whether they want to help out or not... Perhaps it will just reward Commendations? I'm still kind of peeved that the Commendation system was so lackluster... Heck, if the Roulette is just a "Pair up with first timers", then they've shot themselves in the foot; Anima weapons requiring Poetics has already effectively given us the same thing. People are going nuts to help out and get that Poetics bonus...
From the Live Letter;
So seems Achievement based? Wonder if they'll just lock it behind having Lv60 (Lv60 Rogue = Rogue Mentor, for example), or something more... robust... like saying only people with lots of Commendations can become Mentors... That might actually be the best way to implement the Mentor Roulette, locking it behind Commendation Achievements. Then you have to be generally helpful to even get the Roulette for the extra rewards... People can still "cheat" to farm Commendations though, so it's hardly perfect, but it would certainly lock out a few people who have no interest in helping and just want the extra rewards, or cause them to actually start being helpful.The Mentor System (Tentative)
This system will allow veteran players who have certain achievements to be called “Mentors” for Disciples of War/Magic and also Disciples of Land and Hand. Once players become a “Mentor” they will be able to use a system which will help new adventurers. Players will be able to use features such as a roulette called the “Mentor Roulette,” which is close to volunteering, but we hope we can motivate those who want to support beginners.
Come to think of it, they kind of make it sound like Mentors will be more specific than "I am a Mentor", since you can be one for Disciples of Land and Hand as well... So would Rogue/Ninja Mentor actually be a thing? Could tie in with the Training Hall that way; Have an Achievement for proving you can really play your Job there, and have that Achievement required for becoming a Mentor. Then anyone with <Job> Mentor status is (hopefully) someone who knows what they're doing. Getting the Lv60 Achievements really doesn't indicate you know anything, after all.

The real question remains: can we train new players by beating the crap out of them?

yea i recall them saying they planned more GC ranks for 2.35. Never happened.
Why would locking it behind level 60 be a bad implementation, when it is clearly the only one that makes sense for the Job. There are poor lvl 60 players as well, unfortunately. You realize that, right? One can only hope it does more harm than good lol.
