    DirectX switch greyed out

I have three PC's on which I have installed FFXIV. The two desktops seem to have no problem. However, I also have a laptop with the game installed. For some reason, when I use the config button in the updater/launcher, the DirectX switch is greyed out and it will not let me turn it on.

The system is running Windows 7 which I believe means DirectX 11 is available, and the system info button in the updater/launcher includes a line that identifies the DirectX version as DirectX 11. But it still will not let me turn that switch on.

Can anyone give me a clue on something I can look it in that system that might be making the updater/launcher believe I can not run DirectX 11? (Is it possible that the problem is occurring because I am using only the built in display?)

What graphics card do you actually have on that machine that won't let you click DX11? The simplest answer is that it simply doesn't support DX11 which is why it doesn't let you select it (Windows 7 isn't enough, the card itself also needs to support it).

Start by installing the end user runtime.

The laptop has a nvidia geforce gt 630m graphic card in it. It did work at one time, but after having had to reset to factory default setup with a full re-install of FFXIV it hasn't hasn't let me change the DirectX 11 switch at all.

I did try to install the DirectX runtime, but it said it was already there (or newer) so it didn't actually install because it wasn't needed.

I downloaded the benchmark and ran it in DirectX 11 mode and it ran ok.

This is not a real powerful machine. I only use FFXIV on it when I am away from home for an extended period to keep in touch with FC members and I don't do much even when I do get on since it doesn't really run the game all that well. But I think it should still be able to do DirectX 11. It just won't let me.

You're using a 64-bit os right (does 32-bit even exist anymore) and 64-bit client?

If yes in both cases, try installing the visual C package

Does your laptop have two graphic cards (integrated and Nvidia)? My laptop does and I need run the client with the contextual menú and launching it with the Nvidia card to be able to turn on DX11. Or adding the ffxivboot.exe to the Nvidia panel and mke it work with the Nvidia card at launch. By deafualt, the game launcher run with the integrated card, though the game does with dedicated nvidia.

The laptop is running the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Ulitimate. Yes, there is still a 32 bit version of the OS in Windows 7 and even in Windows 10. I have another older system that is running it (but FFXIV is NOT installed on that system... it could not handle it). The Visual C package is installed on the laptop.

It may well be I do have two graphic interfaces. Once for the built in laptop display, and one for the HDMI port (which I am not using). The GT 630m may be meant for that HDMI port, but I get the impression it can display to the built in screen too. Unfortunately, I do not understand what a "contextual menu" is so I don't know how to try that out.

It is not the interface, but two internal graphics cards. On laptops are common have a Intel graphic for normal activity, and a dedicated Nvidia card for high perfomance. The switch normally is automatic, but some games has to do it manually. On my laptop, the game automatically run on Nvidia, but not the laucnher. To enable DX11, the launcher need work also on Nvidia card.

The contextual menu is the rigth click on the mouse. Go to the FFXIV instalation folder, go to the boot folder and you will see a ffxivboot.exe. Right click on it and you will see something like this:

On run with Graphic processor, select Nvidia. This menu only will appear if you have 2 graphics card. If do not appear, then you have only 1.

    Thank you very much.

That menu did come up using a right click on the short-cut the installation software put on the desktop. And starting the launcher/updater from that menu does enable the DirectX 11 switch to be changed. Once changed, it will stay in place unless I forget and start it the old way. I have to start it that way every time. But it does work.
