Jump isn't there for a reason. The game has walls, they're called things you can't walk over. If they added "jump" where you could jump over the cracks, they'd have to replace them with actual walls. cracks in the ground are merely more ascetically appealing walls.

Or they could just make you plummet to your death.

In what way is the game being held back by the inability to jump? Saying "well it just -is-" is a thought-terminating cliche.

Saying "Hey, development team, you should put jumping into v2.0 as part of the spec, and design zones to take advantage of this in a fun and tasteful way", though, I can get behind, even if I'm not sure I agree with the sentiment myself.

It's being held back because one of the first gameplay footage released for this game was of an elf running up to a barrier, ankle-high, and getting stuck on it. Everyone on youtube was like: "you gotta be kidding me, you can't jump over that? That's lame, literally"

And that's why ffxiv being held back by lack of jump.

Also, the thousand other reasons which you can visit any number of jump threads on this forum to refresh your memory of.

Only other reasons that are seen in said threads:

"So you don't feel glued down"
"So you can explore more" (Yet ignoring the fact maps have to be designed in said way for this to even matter.)
    "PvP"
"More interactive boss fights" - Even with server issues, they're proving they can make more active boss fights without it so it's not a necessity to make more engaging fights.
"Move faster" (which is largely placebo.)

    Not 100% right
Examination of the implementation of jumping(moved from Current Tasks as lower priority)
    *Implementation dependent upon risk analysis

    No problem with 2.0
Map redesign is a part of 2.0

Quite agreed that being held up by a ankle-high fence is pretty dumb! I facepalmed along with everyone else. There are solutions besides 'jump button' for that, though - either make fences realistically high, or allow people to pass right through them (this second solution is what they're working with now, although they've openly stated it's a stopgap and I'm curious as to how they'll handle this in 2.0. Possibly just by not putting in any freaking terrain blocks that are visibly small-enough-to-jump-over, that's how I'd handle it.)

My main /gameplay/ problems with jump involve PvP (and it'd be fairly simple to just turn off jumping in PvP, I imagine, although people seem to think that jumping in PvP is a feature, not a bug, which... ymmv, I suppose) and auto-follow (if you're constantly having to jump to navigate a zone, it makes auto-following someone really tough, unless they change auto-follow to also auto-jump when appropriate.) There are workarounds for all of these issues!

When people think of FFXIV, do they seriously go "Oh, right, that's that game where you can't jump! How lame"? I mean, Twelve know the game has deeper more serious problems than that even as of 1.19, so...

It just seems to me like there's no compelling reason to want jumping to exist in the game other than 'it would be cool!', which: is a perfectly valid reason, I'm kind of 50/50 on it myself, it'd probably lead to more visually interesting zones! It'd also probably lead to airwalls and falling damage and obnoxious stuff like that. People seem to be operating from a baseline of "Jumping is the devil because I say so" or "Jumping is absolutely necessary in a modern MMO because I say so", and I think we'd be able to give the devs better input as a community if we were more careful to actually think about why we do/don't want jumping, instead of basically treating it as a holy war or something to be Angry On The Internet about, as I think this is one area where the devs are closely looking at the forum feedback in terms of "Should we implement this in 2.0 or not?".

I dont understand. was that notwhat i said. Wasn't it for a summer release THEN it was canned and delayed? thats what i thought i said was happening.

Besides Yoshi says it in one of the interviews that he was surprised at the fan reaction and will not add it now. But he still wants it.

Exactly, which is why I never get the whole "Jump will instantly solve all problems and allow us to explore more!" I've fallen out of pretty much every FFXIV map at least once lol, there's nothing to explore beyond what they want us to explore.

They even said all collision detection changes were temporary until map redesign.

    .
    No, the marked difference is:

"We will implement it" = It will be implemented.

"Examination of implementation" = Looking at the idea of implementing/how it would be/uses etc, not confirming it will be implemented.

You stated he said it will be implemented by end of summer.

From what I gathered, he was just surprised that there were people that were asking for them not to add in jumping, it wouldn't make sense to me for him to say he would like to add it and then not.
