Really you will just have to suck it up and do it. If you want to expedite the process, just look up a guide for all the aether-thingies and it should only take maybe 15 minutes per area not including the ones unlocked by quests.
Flying also makes getting around much faster, so that little bit of time spent unlocking flying is more than recouped many times over just by the time you save getting around.
I started typing a response but this one ^ pretty much covers it.

Unlocking flying really isn't difficult and is well worth the relatively small amount of time spent on acquiring it. Flight is a gameplay element that is intended for players to use, it's not really something you can or should ignore.

They even made it easier since 3.0 launch, so anyone complaining just literally wants to complain due to impatience.

Can always have a friend with a 2-seater mount drag you around to all the available currents, and then just work on the quest/dungeon currents when you have a chance.

Its just annoying, pointless busywork though. I would rather pay gil to just learn to fly like they do in WoW and that would be the end of it. Its actually true that I was against flying in this game fullstop since it ruins the immersion.

Funny, considering I ignored it all the way to level 56. Flying should be an optional thing, not a "must have" to progress.

At least in Azys Lla you get it on the way of the main quest.

IMO, that's what they should do for all zones in the future. It's just additional effort on both the players and the devs end for no gain other than a minor annoyance for some people. It's not like getting flying on the way prevents you from exploring the area as the currents currently force you to. They could adopt the compass system for (some) treasure maps instead.

It's not pointless though, as others have pointed out.

Ironic since WoW did away with this mode of flight aquisition.

Unless they changed it in 3.2, you cannot mount a two seater chocobo in flying areas, until you unlocked all air currents, to prevent carting people without flying.
