Problem: The Mentor requirements cater to players who have no business being Mentors.

last time i was in a best buy i asked for help finding a headset and the employee pointed over my shoulder at the opposite side of the store couldnt even be bothered to show me where it is i hate best buy havent been back and why is everyone talking about retail stores anyway

It's not a full-time job, but you are choosing not to turn off the status even when you don't want to help. That's like... okay, here's an example. Take a store like Best Buy or Target where the employees have an actual uniform. What you're doing would be like someone showing up to their job on their day off with their uniform and nametag on, and then telling customers that ask them for help that they aren't on the clock and are really just there so they can get back into the break room to chat with their co-workers. It's misleading at best, and you really can't blame people that expect you to help when you have that "uniform" on.

I had already met the requirements to be a Mentor since I started in 2013 and had each role leveled. While I have PLD, DRK, NIN, BRD, WHM, and DRG at Lv60, I'm not a "Mentor", since I still am not 100% fluent and knowledgeable of my jobs. I mean, NIN is main at iLv223, but there are NINs with lesser iLvs who perform better than me. My DRK/PLD is iLv215. While I can tank effectively, there's that lower iLv tank that can out-dps my tanks while both of us are MT at different times.

That said, I'll never attempt to teach someone how to play a job, or what rotations to use, because the little things I'm good/excel at:

NIN: Keeping dots up, Shade Walker on MT constantly, Goading without being told, getting that Trick Attack in, doing mechanics...
BRD: Keeping dots up, required songs are up, stopping WAR's Pacification...
WHM: Rarely would someone die. I can keep heals going even with low MP...

...there's other people who do far better. Like, being good at healing kinda means nothing to many players if I'm not dps'ing as WHM. My utilities on NIN and BRD are on point, but there's the damage-out complaints.

I didn't read all of posts in this thread, but I agree with the OP.

I've had plenty of dungeons where the "mentor" was not acting like a mentor at all. I've had some who were very rude. Others who begin to pull the boss before the newcomer has a chance to view the storyline cutscene. Others who kick a player when they don't perform well, instead of teaching them how to do it.

I've had mentor tanks who never use a single cooldown during the entire run.

I've had mentor DPS who decide the tank isn't moving fast enough, pull more and more mobs, and when the tank can't hold all of the threat or dies, get upset.

In fact, I have never once been in a dungeon where I saw a mentor give a single piece of useful, kind advice to another player.

I am certain there are some good mentors out there and I don't know what goes on the Novice network, but whenever I am in a dungeon and someone has the crown next to their name, I am immediately put on alert. Not all of the ones I am in a dungeon with are bad by any means, but some of them are and they actions made me suspicious of the other ones. Call it one bad apple spoiling the barrel.

The people who have helped me most in this game are people who are not mentors.

Just imagine the amount of status toggling when a mentor goes to farm fates. :'D Showing that you are a mentor doesn't mean that you become a payed employee and stop being a player. As a mentor you should feel obliged to show some basic decency and be understanding of sprouts regardless of what your online status is, but it's ridiculous to think you have to be ready to serve people like an employee at all times if you dare to have the crown on.

yeah , as mentor i would answer any questions , or explain boss when asked , but dont tell me im forced to go and help every1 in the game because thats not what mentors are for....

gotta love too ppl that say that all the mentors they find are horrible ....now i understand how Drg feel.... 2 rotten apples and we need to burn the whole tree ....

The entire mentor system is pointless wither the crown is enabled or disabled.

Or because I don't want to disable the status for one or two instances when I run with friends? I didn't realize mentoring was a full time job without breaks.

I got all of this just by talking to the Smith. And I took screenshots highlighting the part about identifying as a mentor while the setting is active. I don't think this can be made any clearer. If you have no intention of acting like a Mentor, be a grown up and toggle that crown off.

I love it when people read to deep in another's words when the point was clear from the start. Mentors get rewards for being mentors. You can be the worse possible mentor but still be rewarded. You can just be a straight up ***hole and also be rewarded. SQ needs a better requirement for Mentor titles to avoid people abusing their titles. Basically what he said.

Imo based on my general experiences, they should rename Mentors to Divas, or just eliminate the crown symbol so that the "I don't want any responsibility but I think everyone should know I've completed multiple menial, yet time consuming tasks" people have nothing to cling on to.

then SE needs to put a /mentor on /mentor off ,if they really expect ppl to travel to the npc everytime u want to do your own "adventures".....and back after u finish....yeah not gonna happen....
