I think all you really have to do is want to help people to be a Mentor, and sometimes that might not include having done TEX or the other EXs a load of times. I keep getting MEX with everyone being new except me and things kind of go bonkers since I don't know exactly what the other roles do since I always healed the fight when I did it.
