The Path to 3-Star is ... paved with more 2-Star crafting

So messing around on Ariyala's website, it looks like I can either
    1. sink millions of gil into pentamelding my left-hand side 150 gear, or
    2. craft the craft-specific 170 LH gear for each specialist class and trimeld it.
Including my wife's main and our alts, that means crafting up each of the craft-specific 2-Star LH gears, except maybe the chest pieces (the scrip chest pieces are not bad and have 4 CP). The common 170 gear (accessories and belt) gear we already have for all four characters.

That's a lot of 2-Star crafting. It's not something we'll be able to do over a lunch break, you know?

Is this a reasonable plan, or am I just irrationally afraid of pentamelding?

I'm afraid of pentamelding too. I don't have the materia supply to use good melds all the way to the bottom, and I don't think it's worth spending millions of gil on it. Waiting till you have more of the superior 170/180 gear is a good idea in my opinion. You only really need uber gear for 3 classes at the moment, said since the 3-star recipes are all specialist.

My main character has three Specializations.
My wife's main character has three Specializations.
My alt character has three Specializations but I only plan to gear up one at first.

So it's a nice problem that we have, but still a problem.

You don't need 8 specialist in fact

The alchmist need only his book but stay 2* and provider camphor which is non specialist
(I don't know who want to try the new awful potion XD)

The BSM is mostly useless because ARM can do the same ingot and do armor (while bsm got alagan replica and fourniture)

So the main Crafter to have are GSM, CRP, WVR, LTW, ARM

Still didn't see the CUL book...
Don't know if it worth it or not

Thanks, that's good advice. We'll do GSM (wife's main), CRP (my main), WVR (wife's main), LTW (my main), and ARM (my alt) first. Or I might switch my main to ARM, since my wife's alt has BSM.

After looking at 3* recipe for culinarian
It's not that worth it to have it...

Maybe 1 or 2 food could be good raid food
    The gatherer food is brillant
    The crafting one is awful
And there is a useless fish XD

I'm not big on heavy melding, here's the setup I'm working on:

Hmm i like your setup, it doestn really needs materias IV and still could be pushed up slightly for a bit more cp just in case or replace the 180 with 170 and cheap overlds

While nowhere near as common as Tier 3, Tier 4 Materia are at least obtainable, and have been for quite some time, even with airships returning a lot of them.

Personally, I'm trying to hit 3* craft/control without the Soul of the Crafter and without food. It's doable, though requires very heavy melding. I'm using one i180 piece, the rest are going to be all i170. CP first and foremost, then Control, then whatever room is left over gets some Craftsmanship Materia.

Aye i would love do that too, but sadly on my server control IV jumped from 200k b4 patch to 600-700k now, Control III to 120-150k. And also is hard get the materia from ship when are few crafters on the FC that also need them.
