Preferred Client Questions

I'm enjoying the FFXIV trial, and I'm looking into upgrading to a proper account. I have a few questions before I make my commitment though.

What client of the game is preferred between the Square Enix client and the Steam client? I'm in Canada so I'm worried about matters of exchange rate and regional pricing adding up if I play for a long time, and as I understand the pricing scheme is a little bit different on the Steam version of the game? Could someone give me a quick list on the pricing of subscriptions and services under the two versions? I'm particularly interested in server transfer rates.

Additionally, is the standard level membership worthwhile for a new player? I understand that one character can access all the classes in this game, but I'm not sure if I'm missing out on any significant content by only having one character slot per server.

I'm pretty new at this too, but the way I understand it is that you can do everything on one character if you choose. You won't be held back or miss out on anything by only playing one character. You are only limited to one character slot during the trial. This increases to eight slots per server when you purchase the game, which I think adds up to a possible forty character slots per data center.

That is not completely right
What RAchangelo is asking about is the 2 different subscription models you can pick with the full game. One is cheaper but you can only create one character per server, the other allows for 8 per server but you pay more per month^^

To answer the actual question:
If you aren't an RPer who needs various alts for all kinds of different scenes in his roleplay sessions, having one character is completely sufficient, so don't worry
Also, you can always upgrade should you feel the urge to play an alt but stay with your friends, so there is no reason to start with the more expensive sub.

Sadly can't help you on the Steam vs. SE version because I'm not familiar with the prices in Canada.

I actually wasn't aware you could pay using Steam. I technically own two copies of the game, a legacy SE version of the game, and a Steam version of the game that I picked up for my boyfriend (and so I could download the game lazier and use steam overlay stuff). Both of us use the Mog Station to pay.

The one thing to keep in mind though, is that you need to get any additional add-ons using the same method. So, I needed to purchase Heavensward from an online retailer, while he needed to purchase it over Steam (Well, technically I did and he paid me since it's my steam account but whatever).

That all said, in the end there should functionally be no difference.

You can't mix Steam and the normal SE versions of the game. If you decide for one you have to stay by that.

I'm not sure about that but was it so that you can not get the material collector's editions through steam, only digital? Not necessarily an issue for everyone but i like my dragon statue <3 . And yes, whichever method you choose you need to stick with the same method for future expansions.
