I think regardless of what route they take, people will be upset because a lot of the playerbase form their own sort of head-canon regarding their character's personality. While I may not always agree with how my character has been reacting lately, I'm willing to let Square Enix do as they please if for no other reason than to watch them try and give character growth to a silent protagonist.
I agree with that. In 2.0, the WOL didn't really do anything other than nod along. 3.0 is making them actually emote how they feel and react to situations like any normal person would. It's fun to see what was a blank character slowly becoming a character of their own, even if my own image/avatar is on it.
I can forgive stuff like prepping to counter-punch Emannelain (he did just hit Thancred), as long as there's no more situations like the WoL stoically nodding after G'raha seals himself in the Crystal Tower, not to mention all the NPCs afterwards agreeing with "you" how wonderful it was after "you" explain it to them. (We had a debate over the cultural differences on display in another thread, this was definitely that.)
For me, it was like if they had the WoL not drop the smile he put on as Haurchefant died, going on to tell Count Fortemps how bravely his son died with a smile on his face. It was pretty much the complete opposite of my own reaction to that scene, and it ended up pulling me out of "my" character for the rest of 2.X.
It will take a long time for my trepidation at this new style to subside.
