The fee for extra retainers is a per month charge added to your subscription fee, so you have to keep paying for them in order to keep your access to them. In the US, it's $2 per month for each additional retainer beyond your two free ones. (I'm not sure of the equivalents if you use a different currency.) I think the maximum is 8 retainers.

Maximum at the moment is 8 retainers, yes. So you can rent from mog station 6 retainers. Also to note. If you for some reason cancel your retainer subscription, the retainer just becomes inaccessible in the game. They still retain their inventories which can be accessed again when you resub for correct amount of retainers. That is to say, no items in their inventory is lost even if there is a break in renting them.

Note, while the amount says 10 it tends to start on 5 when retainer just gets on the level and then grows to 10 as they level past it.

If you send your retainer out on a Quick Exploration I think it can bring back nearly anything. Including rare drops if you are really lucky.

Yes, but that goes for quick ventures evenly on all roles so it shouldn't factor into which class to give to them. By some sources the outcome of quick ventures is tied to the retainer's iLvl though.
