I think it has more to do with SCH having the lowest burst damage of the three but the best DoT, which can't really be expressed in 3 minutes.

^ No? Broil is 170, Stone III is 210, Malefic II is 200.
Bio II + Miasma + Bio + Aero = 135 dot potency.
Aero II + Aero III = 90 dot potency.
Combust + Combust II = 85 dot potency.

So what SCH gets in dots, it loses in its main damage spell.

Energy Drain is 150 x3 / 60s = 450/60 = 7.5
Fluid Aura is 150 / 30s = 150/30 = 5
Assize is 300 / 90s = 300/90 = 3.33
WHM together then is ~8.33.

That makes WHM and SCH pretty equivalent, but WHM clearly pulls ahead when you realize how much more often WHM is throwing out Stone III compared to SCH casting Broil. 2 dots to manage, not 4. Same goes for AST, though AST lacks off-gcd attacks, so it falls a bit behind at this point...

However, couple all of that with WHM having Presence of Mind and AST in a solo fight having access to 1 card every 30s, and always leading with enhanced or extended Balance, and you're left with a pretty clear picture of why WHM and AST are stronger single-target solo dps than SCH is.

It's not about duration, it's about raw single-target potential.
