Unless this is some cruel hoax, here is the interview where he mentions it. Glad to see pvp becoming a bigger focus in the game.

Q: Are there plans to hold an official tournament, then?

A: Of course there are. However, I think that the two spectator modes I talked about earlier would be absolutely necessary for this, so we have to finish those first. We're also going to make a mode for 1v1 practice duels, as well as a mode for team practice matches. This will give people who are afraid to queue in DF the ability to practice beforehand with friends to get a feel for PvP battles. After the spectator modes and practice modes are ready, we can move towards official tournaments.

Will this be open world or something you queue into? I'd prefer open world, perhaps even the option to spar in estates (3.3 is giving us more furniture room right? I have a corner walled off that I could turn into a dojo...), though if we can queue up with anyone/any Job then that's also fine. Probably easy to work on their end, too. Nice to see they also mention team practice matches.

I'm gonna run out of things to complain about with PvP at this rate... Go back and adjust Wolves' Den/Secure/Slaughter with new mechanics and Lv60, and give us a K/A/D tally in our PvP Profiles and I think I'd just be left complaining about "little" things... Wish the PvE team could be this attentive to their playerbase...

I hope something like Triple Triad Matches + a "PvP ready" status,
so you can't annoy people with Duel request spam if not in that status and you have to ask to others if you have to engage.

And *cough cough* if they implement this, I hope they will leave us as free as possible in party composition, not only 1vs1 even because it could be much more useful to lear be in a small party.
For example as healer I would like to engage matches as me alone in my pt and against mroe players in order to improve how to survive when you get some pressure and see how much can I last.

Anyway I'm happy they will implement this, but I hope they will keep the pvp contents up!

Coming off the back of something like the Grand Melee in the MSQ, that's quite a funny comment... We also had a nice duel with Hoary Boulder during 2.x... Yoshida, it fits with the lore... We've actively had two duels with friends in the MSQ at this point...

The only possible problem is harassment, but that is easy enough to solve with an opt in system (PvP Mentor system would be perfect for that)... Open world duels would probably be the easiest way to have a spectator mode...

Totally agree. Honestly, the number of times they've thrown "lore" in our faces as an excuse for why they haven't implemented certain PvP features is kind of mind numbing, especially when, nine times out of ten, the lore could easily fit what they are resisting.

In any case, I agree that an Opt in system would most certainly need to be implemented. Given that the game is, mostly, PvE, it really wouldn't make sense to have people just running up and smacking random players around (especially new players who are just trying to level up). Having anything other than an opt in system would make it too easy for the game environment to turn toxic. I do hope that they eventually implement one (along with a mentor system), even if it it's just in certain areas (similar to the way they handled Trip Triad). I'll even take arena duels in the meantime. In fact, I think that arenas should definitely be included regardless of if there is open world pvp, because there's potential for official matches and modified features in a closed environment.
