They did mention though that the exp bonus for map completion remains, but did not clarify what was meant by it - is it only a small amount of exp gained upon entering that zone for the first time, or is it all a lump sum of all the exp that would have been gained filling in all portions of the map? I think we should wait til the the full patch notes are released before making judgement on this. As far as I can figure it this was changed in order to help new players find their way through the game more quickly, as it is only ARR areas that are affected (HW areas still require you to fill in each part of the map individually).
The thing I'm curious about is how this would affect the achievements for map completion - does a new player gain that achievement upon simply entering that area? It seems a bit cheap to grant an achievement for... doing little other than zoning into an area. But ah well, as I said I think we should wait til the full patch notes are up before making final judgement on this.
Sadly yes, it's mentioned in the patch notes for 3.2;

It makes it easier to navigate around the first time for sure. I remember trying to make a direct line to my quest objective after entering a new zone only to be met with many obstacles and walls, only to discover that i couldn't have possibly gotten to my destination from my original course, then having to backtrack and try again.
But
How will people know where they haven't been?

Wow, that is kinda sad.
I, for one, love finishing my maps.
I guess the player automatically gets the mapping achievement by entering the zone? That's silly.
It's a little unnerving. Surely if someone is completely new to the game they'd want to take the time to explore and gradually tackle more and more content as it opens up? If not, are those the sort of players that we want to flood into the game? If they rise in number then it's inevitable that the development of the game will erode away further aspects of exploration in the misguided cause for 'efficiency'.

I didn't really like having to map the areas myself. I still have some areas not fully mapped as no quests took me to the area and I don't really care about finishing it.
It will make it easier for the new players to get around if they can see the whole map at once when they enter the zone which I am all for.

Just another excuse to help new players not understand something. Next when they get to HW maps they are gonna complain because it's not fully opened, can't wait!
When is the new player hold my hand crap gonna end!!!!
I have everything unlocked obviously but this still makes me :'(
Unlocking the map is so fun!

Clearly, the best Final Fantasy character is Locke Cole.
Glamour is TRUE ENDGAME

One of the biggest complaints about ARR was the small size of the zones, and now they're doing something to make them even smaller? Hmmmmmmmm...
